The Rio Grande Valley is a wonderful place to bird. There are many State and National parks in the Valley. The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center has both fresh and salt water and a boardwalk over the entire area. Next door is the SPI convention center which also has a boardwalk. March is problematic because of spring break so don't plan on staying there. The earlier you can go in March the better. The rest of the Valley is fine in March. Also Rockport may be reopened by March. A wonderful place to see the largest cranes in the US the 5' Whooping Cranes and the Sandhill cranes. Hope you enjoy birding the Valley as much as we do. For up close and personal it's worth going to Salieno. Enjoy!!
I go to Corpus Christi every spring for birding. Peak migration usually occurs in late April and early May. Many great birding sites around Corpus Christi and Port Aransas. For March birding, I recommend the Rio Grande Valley around Edinburgh. Many great parks for outstanding birding.
The later you go in March the better, as migration will just be getting underway. Anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley should be good, depending on how early migration is. My favorites: Estero Llano Grande State Park, Bentsen Rio Grand State Park, Frontera,
Salineno, etc. Any of the parks in the Brownsville/Mcallen area. You might be interested in joining birdingpals/com. You can get in contact with local birders who are willing to take visitors around. If you get to central Texas, check out Warblerwoods. Where are you from?

The Port Aransas and Rockport areas are still recovering from Harvey. However, the Whooping Crane festival is in late February, but they can be seen and photographed in Aransas Bay well into April, which is when we went. Aransas Bay is in Rockport. It's best to go when there has been rain. The rain fills up ponds and eddies which attracts all kinds of birds. We stayed at a great place in Port Aransas. The beaches, btw, are fantastic, and you can drive onto them.
Laguna Seca ranch is fantastic.
It is not SW Texas, but I did Featherfest last year in Galveston. It lasts a week and has great venues. You get guidance from professional photographers and knowledgeable birders. Plus the "official" accommodations where very nice and reasonable. Just a thought for something different.
