Hi everyone,
I am expecting a delivery from UPS today for a Canon eos 77D from Adorama. The cost was $799.00 and upon reviewing the tracking information it doesn’t mention a signature being required. It seems to me that any item with that dollar amount would require a signature upon delivery. Is it me, or does that seem odd? Luckily I am in a position that I can watch out for the delivery today, but if I wasn’t, I would really be concerned. Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks, if that’s how you feel about your money, send me $800 and if it doesn’t show up I won’t feel so bad.

It has been our experience that UPS will leave a package at the top of our driveway by the garage access door. Even though there is a doorbell there, the drivers never ring it. Since we are retired and often home, we can often hear the truck taking off after delivery, but if we are not home the package will sit there for hours.
When we have packages arrive by USPS, the driver always rings the front door bell to let us know there is a delivery there on the front stoop. Of course, if we aren't home, it too will sit on the stoop until we return.

Many times, depending on the value of the item, the shipper will require a signature from the shipping company. But, usually, I find that FedEx will require the signature frequently, while UPS seldom does. I suspect you'll get your camera. My issue is when no signature is required, and the shipping company just leaves it on the stoop, subject to theft or the weather.

Unfortunately it is now the name of the game. That is why there are thieves following the UPS and FedEx and just taking the boxes off the porches. If they can't use it for themselves they will just sell it on EBay or Craig's List. What is giving the thieves problems are all the personal security cameras that show in great detail their faces making it very easy to identify them. If it wasn't for those personal security cameras, the UPS and FedEx practice of just dropping off the package would have ended long ago.

I'm expecting a delivery of 1000 rounds of 10mm ammo Thursday to be delivered by UPS. Cost is $446.00. I have no idea what time of day it will be delivered. I going out with friends for dinner so I may not be here when it arrives. I have had them stuff it into my big mail box on a major road so they could avoid the drive up my long driveway. It's not marked as ammunition. It seems to me that more care should be given as to how something that dangerous should handled. Sometimes they drop it off near my front door. I'm not required to sign for it.

I guess it depends on your neighborhood. I've often had packages delivered at that value, and sometimes 2 or 3 times as valuable, over the years. Nothing lost yet. I hate the signatures. Sometimes things do get shipped that way. If you work, or are not home often during the day you'd never get your packages if they required a signature. The last expensive item I got via UPS was a $1600 laptop left at my door. We do most of out shopping on line and regularly get several deliveries a week.

Interesting. Here in San Francisco I know our regular UPS drivers and they're all pretty good. The signature required bit is important. Yesterday I was expecting a replacement for a faulty battery from Canon - so low value. I even had a time range for delivery, but missed the delivery. There was a sticky note on the door advising of repeat delivery. I went out to shop, no sign of a UPS van anywhere. Came home, and saw one parked a block away. Drove up, the driver recognized me, handed me the package and got his signature. Even asked a few light hearted questions about cameras. Some of the other delivery firms are less thorough. Often I just hear a thud as they have thrown the box up the steps and bounced it off the front door. Don't like that with delicate things like hard drives. Perhaps there is the ability to request a signature being required from the vendor. Sometimes it can be done from the UPS website or software.

Also, one can request holding the package for collection, but we have a few UPS depots within 5 or 10 miles, so it's not too much of a hardship. I'm personally pretty happy with UPS.

As Peterff said, having a good relationship with your UPS, USPS, FedX and DHL delivery drivers is worth it's weight in gold. My UPS driver rings the bell, and if there's no answer, leaves the package on the side of the house on top of a wall where it isn't visible from the street.

I'm glad I live where I do. If we are not home the UPS or FEDEX driver leaves a notice card and we can either phone to reschedule the delivery for when we will be home, or go to their office and pick it up. The Canada Post driver also leaves a notice that delivery was attempted and the package is now at the local Post Office (which in my case is two blocks away). The local Post Office will hold it for two weeks, or longer if you expect a delivery while you are away. My Camera Store puts the warning "NO SAFE DROP" right on the shipping label and requires a signature.

I'll add another comment. This is not UPS, USPS, or any of the other shippers mentioned, but I was expecting a wine club shipment today that required a signature from someone over 21, and I found it sitting happily on the doorstep, all by itself, no signature, no knock, no doorbell, nada. Perhaps I should call the winery....

Thanks for all the replies. It just struck me as strange that Adorama would not want a signature to prove delivery to the correct person or agent thereof in case of a dispute.

Thanks again

There may be an additional cost for the shipper. You can always ask!
