Fall color at Great Smokey Mountains?

I am looking for an opportunity to do some fall color and wondered if any of the hogs have knowledge of the Townsend area and the park. Some of the reports say peak is this week or next. My experience with internet reporting of color is less than stellar. I am also looking for waterfalls in the area or out of the park. Perhaps there is something better than and less crowded than the park would be?
Thanks for your help!

Try Brevard, NC for tons of waterfalls.

Thanks for the suggestion. Is the color good there?

Edit, for some reason I can't get the above link to all be a link, use the last part of the link too!

Any knowledge about the color for next week? I have plenty of waterfall pics with little color around them. Thanks!

I was in Cades Cove last week. Leaves were just beginning to change. Our weather cooled down this week, so I think the colors will peak this weekend.

Since your going to be in Townsend, try Abrams Creek from the south end of the Park. Little used trail along the creek to the falls. If you have to vehicles, the trail and creek run through to Cades Cove.

Color depends on the altitude as well. I've gone around this time in years past & it had been too early...

That's what happened to me in UP Michigan...a week too early. It's always a guess and in the hands of weather. The cool down should make the colors pop. Maybe next week will offer good color. Leaf drop around water is one of my favs. Really appreciate your sharing!

I'll be in Townsend, next week-arriving for the Great Smokey Mountains Photo Summit. As suggested, the Cades Cove area of the park is a good start. The Foothills Parkway, back toward Walland, offers some excellent vistas, as does the Newfound gap road going toward Clingmans dome and Cherokee. Here's a link to the park's webpage, which has maps in a downloadable PDF form.

Townsend is the best area to stay, in my opinion-they call it the "quiet side of the Smokies" for a reason

We stayed at a friends cabin in Kodak, Tennessee the last time we went but have stayed in Gatlinburg before as well. Besides images, if you are a fan of the outdoors, be sure to visit the Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, Tennessee...

I am looking out the window at the Smoky Mountains now at about 8:30 A.M. and the color is beautiful ----Green. At about 3000ft, no color yet. A few trees are turning yellow, not much reds. Dog woods have turned. My guess about another week or two for full color. Lots of water photo ops, falls and mountain streams. Here it is beautiful no matter what season!

Try the road at Tremont(just inside the park from Townsend and on the way to Cades Cove) to the end. It follows a large creek and gets more spectacular as you get to the end of the road. If you are a hiker there is a trail from there that continues to follow the creek. There is a really nice cascade and lots of small falls along the trail. This trail is an old railroad so it never gets steep.

Also a road that exits the Cades Cove loop is the Rich Mountain Rd. Very nice with some good views of the Cove.

As has been suggested by others, if you are looking to spend some time shooting waterfalls the Brevard/Highlands/Asheville area offers several good opportunities. Dry Falls near Highlands is one of my favorites. Have a wonderful trip, the area you have chosen is very special.

That's what I found as well. Around the last week of October, the first week of November for best color although that can change according to the temps, altitude & rainfall. I've always gone too early when I went around this time in previous years...
