It is all about the eye of the photographer and using the right tool for the job cel phone will never replace a good SLR but it is a excellent tool to have in your acenole

A cellphone camera, in my opinion, is a throwback to those early era pocket digital cameras that had very few controls, and were all fully automatic, yet took decent images. Of course there are many who simply can’t afford a big DSLR or high end mirrorless or bridge camera, but nearly everyone has a cellphone, and for many, that works just fine for a camera.

I agree with some of what you said but from these statements it seems to me that you have not used a high end smart phone or even priced them.

The number of controls on a top of the line iPhone or Samsung will surely surprise you as will their cost. One could easily purchase a good DSLR for less money than either.

Until recently, many of us did not see the true price of a cell phone - at least part of it was quietly bundled into the provider's charge

I just moved up from an iPhone 6SPlus to an iPHone 8Plus.

Totally agree. I find many times that I see a shot and the one thing I have on my person at all times is my IPhone. I am often just amazed at the results.

Just about all I shoot is film and 8x10 sheet film at that. Mix the own developer from raw chemicals in my fully supplied wet darkroom complete with a Devere 8x10 enlarger. You can say I am serious about this. But man do I love the photos from my iPhone. They are great little cameras and I don't always have my favorite camera with me.

Me, too. And another thing - those electric starters on cars are just a passing fad. Give me the hand crank, any day.

Seriously, cell phones can take excellent pictures, but you might not want to print them 2' x 3'. The link below shows cell phone pictures on Flickr.

But I understand that these cell phones have come a long way in overall image quality. I don't have a smart phone - just a 15 year old flip phone that does not take pictures.

As another "ProCamera" user, I agree. However, I often want to change the lens focal length, aperture or get more resolution. That's when I use my "real" camera.

I also am a model railroader (O scale) and I know exactly what you mean. "Rivet counters" come to mind.

Many special interest groups get very picky. I've seen involved with Jaguar car clubs for decades from Chief Judge through club President. It's fun at concours to watch the discussion about what is "original" on an SS90 from the 1930s.

I would like your views on this subject.

I have the same quandary, I now have the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the pictures it is capable of its remarkable. I still love walking about with Nikon d3200, but for those spontaneous shots I love it. Sometimes you are somewhere where a real camera is just not practical, nor is it allowed with today's security measures.

I find it convenient to have a very portable camera with full resolution panoramic and HDR SOOC when the better camera is elsewhere. As with many things, you don't always need the most versatile tool to do a particular job. Is photography about making images with photosensitive devices or having the latest and most expensive equipment? The latter has its own set of advantages but photography is much broader than that. Maybe UHH should not allow a mixed forum when it comes to viewfinder types, or could limit the main forum based on depth of field or whether lenses are interchangeable. I see some great work here and never wonder what was used to produce it, but always remember who did the work.

I'm not satisfied with lens and chip size of cell phones for important pictures, less important stuff such as a part I need to order at work or videoing my macaw dancing to music from the TV , sure.
