Headed to Lancaster, PA on a train trip out of Pittsburgh in 3 weeks. Besides colorful leaves, any suggestions for hidden gems within 50 miles of this "Amish" area?

Of historical interest is Three Mile Island with the massive cooling towers.

I live here, in addition to already mentioned, check out Chiques Rock south of Lancaster on Highway 30. Couple of hundred yard walk to great overlook of Susquehanna River and bridge network next to Columbia. Also River Road on other side of Susquehanna River is a nice drive with expansive river views and wooded hills.

45 minutes south of Lancaster is the Conowingo Dam. On a good day you can see 50 bald eagles waiting for the turbines to stun the fish and provide their lunch! Amazing photo opportunity.

Just a note. The Star Barn has been dismantled and moved to Elizabethtown, Pa. Not completely reassembled yet and they will not allow you to photograph it yet accept by invitation.. Don't forget the Hershey area. Some nice scenery. Also within your 50 mile radius is Mount Gretna, A nice artsy community in the wooded hils in Lebanon county.

PA Railroad Museum in Strasburg; Ephrata Cloisters in Ephrata; Landis Valley Farm Museum on the outskirts of Lancaster. As someone else has noted, there are about 30 covered bridges in the county. The Central Market in downtown Lancaster. The Shoe House between Lancaster and York in Hallam, PA. The architecture of Downtown Lancaster itself. Just beyond your 50 mile limit, I think, but well-worth the extra few minutes is Harrisburg with the State Capital building and also the Star Barn-- Star Barn worth a trip all on its own.

If I remember correctly, aren't there quite a few covered bridges in the area?

Look for an area near a well traveled road (by Amish) where you can get a nice sunrise or sunset. Set your camera up at close to ground level as you can and wait for a horse drawn cart or buggy driven by an Amish man and get the shot. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Just a minor recommendation---Don't "SNAP AWAY" without permission if in secluded/remote areas

I second your suggestion regarding the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum (photos below), one of the country's major railroad museums. Also, the Strasburg RR is located across the street from the museum. The Strasburg Railroad offers steam train rides and tours of their maintenance shop where they restore and maintain locomotives and rolling stock for the Strasburg RR and other tourist railroads around the country.

Thank you for the information on the Star Barn. I lived in Lancaster for a decade, but that decade was two decades ago.

As stated by many members Lancaster has a lot of interesting things to photograph. One thing that people forget, or chose to ignore is the Amish do not like their pictures taken. Capturing their image is against their beliefs and should be respected.

Just ask. Different ones have different values and the Mennonites are in the mix as well and are more opento technology.
