I'd like to hear some opinions on this.

If the resources were available and you presently owned the D810 and D500 would you sell one or both and buy the D850?

To me, that would depend on how badly you want to spend some money, how much convenience you would get from replacing two cameras with one, (Don't forget, you would be losing your back-up and, possibly, some capabilities), and how useful the features of the D850 would be to you.

I have to agree with LFingar, two fine cameras, not sure myself if it is beneficial to upgrade now, maybe if one breaks!

You have two outstanding camera and you would lose too much chasing the Nikon 850. If I had your two cameras this would be a "no brainer." I would keep my Nikon 810 and 500.

No need to sell both, could keep the D500 as back up.

NO, I would not seel the two to buy the 850 unless you are missing some thing that the 850, will give you. You have two great cameras and having a high end full frame and top APSC Nikon, you have the best of both worlds that will allow you to photograph any subject. Last if you find that you do not use the D500 and all your photography is with the Full frame, then sell or trade, but you will take a hit in the wallet if you do so.

If I was making photos as good as yours, I wouldn't even think about changing a thing!

I am upgrading my aging D800E to the D850, keeping my D810 as a backup for now, and keeping my D500 for its crop sensor as always.
My D810 was never my primary camera and was always a backup to the D800E.

Well, that's similar to what I did last year. I have a Canon 7DII, which I kept, but I sold my 6D and bought a 5DIV. Did I really need to do that? No, and I am always hesitant about such expenditures, but I have enjoyed myself with the 5DIV and I don't regret the upgrade in the least. The money wasn't an issue. I just wanted a new toy to play with. It's a hobby, and hobbies are not governed by the rule of reason. At least not in my world! The only advice I can offer is: Do whatever you are comfortable with. I'm certainly not going to try to tell you whether or not to spend your money.

That's the same thing I did.
I still carry the 7DII more than anything.

Fing A, go for it.

A quick scan of the Ebays shows D810s with box and accessories, going for $1800, and the D500 in similar condition for $1000. That'd get you in striking range for a D850, sales tax not included.

I am the voice of unreason.

No I'd keep the D500 and purchase a D850. But rumors has it a D760 is going to be released so I'd wait to learn the specs of that model.
