If you were five or six years old it would be easier for anyone of us to answer that question. But, at your older age, you're showing us your not beyond 5 or 6. Simplicity is the hardest accomplishment. Think about that when you view your photos.

You speak as a beginner, you're a picture taker not a picture maker. You don't seem to know what the difference is. Most take pictures because they do not know if they made a decisive moment keeper.

But, if you like the picture you took, that's what counts. You will learn more about pictures with experience that follows. AP

You might be surprised but Lee's a pro shooter just looking to stimulate interaction. So much for the "beginner theory" based on your own perception leading to inaccurate assumption.

For me I discovered it gives me great pleasure, by sharing what others may have forgotten or bring a smile , to show perfection in a imperfect world, Hopfully to make a difference, in bringing unity back, where division has grown! I'm definitely not a professional photographer, I'm just a work in progress!

I believe the topic at hand is to find out or maybe to set an example of each individuals part on the real gift within & why? A reminder the may have been distorted or puffed up, taking on back to the basics of " Simplicity "

Just because. Why do people hit a little white ball around acres of green grass?

I like that. No real practical reason. They just like the challenge of that "Perfect Shot". (With either one)

Aside from commercial photography why do people take pictures? What do they do with them?

Lee, this is an excellent question. And one that I almost always ask when someone asks me for a critique, thougb in a slightly different way - more like why did you take "this" picture? What was on your mid? What were you experiencing at that moment when you snapped the shutter? And so on . . .

Well, it's certainly not because all my family and friends are dying to see my next amazing photo. I have over 30,000 photos on my computer and not a big line waiting to view them. I take photos to preserve family memories or because something is beautiful and I want to remember it that way. To practice a new skill I'm learning, to be creative, and and sometimes to just enjoy taking random pictures I know will be deleted. It's an outlet from the busy and sometimes mundane world. It has no age limits. I can do this until I'm 100 (I'm halfway there already). So don't argue with people about their questions and the way people answer them. It's all individual. Just go out and shoot.

You take a photo to capture a moment in time. It will be a wonderful remembrance in years to come.

As I read these posts and other posts I am reminded of something I was taught in grade school, a quote by Mark Twain I believe. To paraphrase, "its better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." (Not directed at anyone in particular, BTW)

Photography is a hobby or it is a way to make a living. If it is a hobby photography is made for pleasure.
Many professionals make a very decent living shooting photographs.
What do they do with the pictures? Professionals sell it, amateurs use it as memories or to send them over the Internet.
