Here's one you might like to check out: Panasonic lumix point-and-shoot digital cameras are known among camera enthusiasts for reliability and innovative features. The lumix dc-zs70 brings the legendary optical performance of a 30x (24-720mm) Leica DC vario-elmar lens with amazingly stable 5-axis hybrid o.I.S. (Optical image stabilizer) to a highly portable point-and-shoot travel camera. Traditionalists will love the hands-on manual feel of a lens-mounted control ring, plus the familiarity of an eye-level electronic viewfinder. The modern enthusiast will love the Wi-Fi mobile device controllability and next-generation flexibility that 4K video and 4K photo modes bring to the creative experience.

I have the Lumix DMC-TZ30 (UK designation - TS20 in US) with 20x zoom & love it & it's still going strong after four years (now out of production). Daughter has TZ60/ZS40 with 30x zoom - I think this is exactly what your friend is looking for. There are now TZ70, 80 &, I think, 100.

I have been using the Lumix for two years now. Had the best safari pictures with the 30x zoom. I highly recommend it.
The Sony HX80 is the best "shirtpocket" from the results of my research. 19 mpxl, 30X zoom, Leitz lens, priced reasonably at $349 retail (discounts avail).
I'm replacing my 8 yr old Leica C-Lux and this is the best I have found.
A cellphone is NOT an option (shame shame !!).
The Lumix is made by Panasonic and it is only acceptable with the Leitz lens. The cheaper Panasonics are junk; had one once. You get what you pay for.

Nor any real viewfinder such as EVF, or other serious optical ovf.
I wouldn't consider an EVF a real viewfinder!
No, an EVF on a sony camera gives you 100% of what the sensor sees. It also is always live view, so you are always seeing how you have adjusted the shot via exposure controls -/+, WB, Standard vs Vivid and all your other controls.... I like seeing what I'm getting.
The wife wanted the same thing, decent pictures (didn't have to have raw), longest zoom she could get, wifi, and takes decent pictures. This camera is for travel and for when she is doing genealogy research to take photos of documents and old photos. She went with a Canon SX280 a few years back it had 20x optical zoom. She just replaced that one with the Canon SX720HS with 40 time optical zoom, digit 6 processor, 20 megapixels on its little sensor and a much newer and easier wifi connection. She takes great pictures with it and it fits in purse or pocket very easily. There are no phones that do this as well.
Canon still seems to be reluctant to add 4k video but her reply to that was I could care less about video.

I would prefer an optical viewfinder to an EVF but an EVF is far better than no viewfinder at all (I wouldn't buy an LCD only camera), and they have improved greatly in recent years. And if fact an EVF does have some advantages over an OVF, as was pointed out by someone in an earlier post. A good EVF is very functional and certainly qualifies as a real viewfinder IMHO.

If we take "substantial" away from zoom lens and replace it with "decent" or "healthy", do we have a candidate?
He was pretty strong about not wanting a cell phone, but a real "camera' instead. No need to argue that cell phone do have real cameras. You know what I'm sayin'.
Look at the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-5 and see if that fits his needs.
The closest to your requirements camera that I know of is Panasonic DMC-ZS100: it is small, has 10x zoom and a viewfinder (and even 1" sensor).
I have what it probably an older model of the Panasonic as my "purse" camera. It is pocketable in a large pocket. I have it in a small case designed for a Go Pro. It is the ZMC-ZS60.
Hi Bob,Look into the MINOX line of cameras. They are probably the smallest cameras around.DCC 5.1 classic digital camera is just a guide for you.I hope this helps.Happy hunting.
