Bob, I'm confused as to why you need to purchase a charger. You got one with your camera. I have three batteries for each of my Nikon digitals. I rotate through them, or can take all of them with me should I expect to be doing an immense amount of shooting. Personally, I prefer to spend the bit more and purchase OEM batteries. The main, and low probability, reason is that if anything every happens to the battery inside the camera, Nikon repair can't blame non-OEM components.

My Nikon d7100 uses an EN-EL15 lithium battery. I'd like to purchase a backup battery plus a charger . I've seen a wide range of prices from a variety of sources- $90 to $20. I know it isn't much money but I don't like wasting it either. Is one as good as another or is the Nikon that much better?

I have two batteries for my D7100, one Nikon, one Bower. The Bower does not last as long as the Nikon and is about $5 cheaper. The Bower charges at about the same rate.

I bought Wasabi batteries for my D7100. They will not charge up after 1 year of use. I won't buy them again.

I bought a used Nikon D 600 and it had a DEK battery in it..
DEK en-el 15,, 7.4 V,,1900m AH,, 14.1,,Li-ion.

I have never had any problem's with it... The D 600 has been checked out by Nikon, and the
Firm Ware is up to date...It reads the battery info ok....
I have read about a D 5200 that had a firm ware up date and the D 5200 would not work with a 3rd party battery in the camera, and flashed some mesg. on the LCD screen.. I have read other posts like this..
So I don't know how true this is...

This is my guess,, Nikon don't make their battery's,,, some one makes them, right ???

I have a friend that use's 3rd party battery's and if one won't charge, they send him another battery..
I have read on the Nikon site,, there is a recall on the battery's en-el 15 with a E or F in the Ser. #.

This is interesting..

I have, for a very long time (20+ years) used aftermarket batteries and chargers. I can say truthfully that I have never had an after market battery or charger fail. I have had to deep 6 a couple of Nikon Batteries. I think that there is a word used in many of the messages here that is incorrect. OEM is "Original Equipment Manufacturer". In other words, a company that makes items for the Brand Name products. We have an example that most of us know about. Who makes the sensor for many digital camera manufacturers? Sony of course, this is an OEM. I wonder, does Nikon make its own batteries? I do know they make their own glass for lenses'. IMO some of the aftermarket mfg. have better designs for accessories than Nikon (and other brands). For example I just bought a Nikon P900. To use the Nikon charger to charge the camera battery it must be done in-camera. The aftermarket charger and batteries (4 batteries) can be charged using AC (wall socket) and cigarette lighter in car or from your computer. The charger and batteries cost me (free shipping) less than $25.00, the Nikon battery cost $48.95 each plus shipping and sales tax(might be free shipping or sales tax). All of my aftermarket batteries and other items are purchased from eBay using PayPal. There are certain things to look for when shopping on eBay, but that is for another time. Hank

My preference is to use OEM batteries, because even the smallest amount of impurity in the electrolyte can cause an internal short circuit resulting in battery heating and possibly fire. That is what happened with the original version of the EN-EL3 batteries and what has happened recently leading to the current recall of EN-EL15 batteries.

On two occasions, I have reluctantly had to purchase third party batteries. The first was after the tsunami in Japan impacted the factory where Nikon's batteries are made and Nikon EN-EL3es were not available, and again last month when I was unable to purchase a second EN-EL15 battery for my D810 because of the current recall.

The third party EN-ELe is still in service, but it has always had significantly faster self-discharge than the equivalent OEMs. The third party EN-EL15 seems OK, but I haven't had it long enough to make a determination around its performance.

I will say that I have not seen the huge cost savings on third party batteries. Both of my local camera stores sell the OEM batteries at very competitive prices. (I think they view doing so as a way to get me into the store, hoping I'll buy batteries plus something else.) There has never been a significant economic incentive for me to stray.

Have been using Wasabi Batteries for years in my Canon T5I, 5D and 7DMarkII and have never had an issue. The cost is much less than Canon batteries and last just as long. The charging time is about the same. When buying a Speed Flash that maybe came with a Duracel, Energizer or private label 1.5 volt battery(s) would you hesitate using a Eneloop? I think OEM batteries are over priced.

I bought a back up battery and charger from Best Buy for my D7200 & D500. I don't remember the brand name but I believe it is their house brand. The cost was in the $50 range. The battery and charger work great and I have not had the slightest problem with either. The battery lasts longer than the factory battery (higher capacity) and charges just as fast. Nikon batteries are top quality batteries but you are also paying extra for the name, same as Canon batteries.

You need to check that battery in your d500. I have not found, and have heard the firmware in the d500 does not allow the use of, a battery other than Nikon for the d500.

I have used both second party and Nikon batteries in my cameras. The difference I have found is the batteries do not charge well in my Nikon chargers, and they do not last as long. If you are looking for a cheap way to have a backup, and do not mind replacing them more often, no problem, but in my opinion, it is cheaper in the long run to stick with Nikon batteries and chargers.

I have a D7100 and a D7200 and have been using these (in conjunction with my Nikon batteries) for a few years now in both cameras...never had a problem...I have three Nikon batteries and three of these...both work the same and take the same number of shots and charge just as well as my Nikon ones...not sure if they're available in the US though...

I use those OEM batteries in my D7200. The camera came from B&H with 2 batteries - 1 OEM and 1 Watson. I purchased an additional 2 Wasabi batteries from Blue Nook. No problems. FWIW, we always purchase the Wasabi batteries with the charger for all our cameras and have never had a problem. Ironically, the only time I ever had a battery go bad was several years ago and it was an OEM Sony battery for my Sony P&S.

Definitive answer:

Third party batteries are much cheaper, but are likely to not last as long; sometimes nowhere near as long. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

My experience is exactly that. The third party batteries worked well until they didn't. Some wouldn't hold charge very long, or charge as much. Some started swelling, which risks getting stuck or worse.

I personally try to use OEM whenever possible; only if the battery comes for free or it's hard to find replacements will I use a third party. Even then, I sell them off once I have a suitable supply of OEM batteries.

OK - - so you can buy FOUR cheapies for the cost of one OEM
Even if ONE set dies in a year, you get another and you are STILL ahead of the game.
I buy 2 cheapies for half the cost of ONE OEM, and keep both charged and ready to go.

I note that most of the members who have spoken out strongly against third-party batteries based on apocryphal bad experience have not specified what brand they purchased or from whom they got the batteries.
