My Nikon d7100 uses an EN-EL15 lithium battery. I'd like to purchase a backup battery plus a charger . I've seen a wide range of prices from a variety of sources- $90 to $20. I know it isn't much money but I don't like wasting it either. Is one as good as another or is the Nikon that much better?

You have a nice camera. Don't put a cheapie battery into it.

I'm hoping someone with actual EN-EL15 clone experience will reply, but while waiting for that, I'll say that I've used Wasabi batteries in my Pentax camera, and in operation they've been indistinguishable from OEM batteries.

Another vote for Wasabi batteries - very reliable in my experience

OK. I have experience. I use EN-EL15 batteries in my D800E.
I would not use cheapie batteries in any one of my nice cameras.
That is my experience.

You know the answer to your question. Use what you think is best--or cheapest.

I've never had to replace a Nikon battery, but I had to return the only third party battery I bought.

I bought a back up battery and charger from Best Buy for my D7200 & D500. I don't remember the brand name but I believe it is their house brand. The cost was in the $50 range. The battery and charger work great and I have not had the slightest problem with either. The battery lasts longer than the factory battery (higher capacity) and charges just as fast. Nikon batteries are top quality batteries but you are also paying extra for the name, same as Canon batteries.

I have four Nikons and one Watson that BandH sent free with a camera purchase. I'd definitely advise against getting a Watson. I also purchased eight Watson AAs and was disappointed that they didn't last for many charges.

For the camera you have, I would recommend you stay with the
cameras' manufacturer's batteries and chargers.

I don’t believe you’re going to get a definitive answer here. The subject has come up often, and reports are all over the place - some swear by third party batteries and chargers, others swear at them. OEM units seem to get fewer complaints, though.

Agreed. I tend to stick with OEM usually and will buy a Nikon battery despite my suspicion that Nikon and Canon overprice accessories like these. The charger, on the other hand, I have no qualms about a 3rd party unit. My Nikon charger is very finicky and won't charge at times. IMHO, the design is rather poor.

I stick with O.E.M battery chargers, and I now use only Nikon batteries after having 2 different after market batteries fail within 6 months of purchase I am still using batteries I purchased before 2008 when I upgraded from the D70 - the D300. as I recall one finally died last year being used in My G/F's D300.
"You pays your money and takes your chances", My cameras are: D7100 x 2, D800, D810 and last a D70 converted to Infrared.

I have never had a problem with a Nikon charger not charging, since going to Nikon starting with the D70.

Yes, there is a big spread in prices, but even though it doesn't compare to the price of a camera, $90 is a lot to waste on a charger, depending on the charger.

This looks good.

I've used aftermarket chargers for everything for years with no problems.

You have a NIKON D7100, this is the battery you not only NEED, but want. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/735929-REG/Nikon_27011_EN_EL15_Lithium_Ion_Battery_1000mAh.html?sts=pi
