I've spent the last hour looking for info on Abe's of Maine. The Consumer Affairs website has an almost unending litany of consumer complaints about the company; all seem to involve bait-and-switch, misrepresentation and just plain old lying. This company looks like your worst nightmare.

That pretty much sums it up. In the 1980's, when they were in Maine, they were fairly reputable. Over time, the business was sold, and they became what they are today. I would say the description you found on the Consumer Affairs website is accurate.

General question not specific to this post.....but...... Am I the only one who has a job, and scans the Post's Summary link to know if the daily posts pertains to me? Why is it so difficult to identify what you want to discuss?
Examples: This post -- Difference of what?..........and posts over the years: "Just a coincidence?"........."Eargerly awaiting the Big Brown Truck"............."Can't decide"..........."Did I order the wrong one?"........."Help Please"......."Seeking Heavy Answers"........."I forgot how much I liked".........."Help".................."Frustrated in PA"................."What were they thinking?"............on and on.

Thanks. Now I feel better.

Go on the internet and search for the camera and it will tell you all the information you need.

I have been trying to contact Abes for 4 days to find out if the 810 is foreign made or not. I have tried 3 different ways (2by telephone and 1 by info@). I have had connections made to the info department and they hang up, refuse to answer and once I got an actual voice who told me to hold on.

Does anybody know if Abe's of Maine is reputable? They advertise a brand new D810 for $2070.

For the retail price of a new D850 you are better off keeping your 810 and getting a D500. The purchase price of both the D810 and D500 will still be less than the cost of a new D850. Now you have the best of both worlds - with a D810 and a D500.

I have a D500 and the focusing system is great for wildlife shooters. I wouldn't mind having a FF with the same capabilities for fun and don't care to spend it on a D5.

Grey market. Abe's doesn't want to give you the bad news and is hoping you will order it anyway.

The D810 is one of the finest cameras made by Nikon. It's worth more than the difference of $200.

I purchased a D810 from Abe's. It is gray market and does not come with a warranty, but you can buy a reasonable one from them. Nikon will repair your D810. You can get a refurbished one from Adorama for under $2000 and it comes with a warranty. Camera is reasonable and has a one year warranty for refurbished cameras. I have a D7000 from them.

What is an American made camera? Some Japanese cameras are assembled in Mexico, that is about as close as you will get. You actually would want a Japanese designed and assembled camera, that would be a good one.

I'm thinking of buying a refurbished Nikon D800 or D810. There's a $200 price difference between the two on Adorama. Can anyone tell me in a nutshell what I'm getting (or missing) for the $200?

Wow, there are quite a few differences. Looks worth the extra $200 to me.

Forget Abes. They are crooks.
