I personally wouldn't go that route. Because of the poor optical qualities of welders glass, it's very common to get double imaging in your pictures.

I tried this on a partial solar eclipse several years ago using #13 or #14 welders glass. You need to keep the camera aimed at the sun and the welders glass perpendicular to the line of sight or you will get refractions and double images.

The attached file is a montage of the better shots.

Yes, it will work well. It is a more elaborate version of the old cardboard tube and solar film or glass

Those certainly look promising and the reviews are largely positive. I just ordered 4 - one each for two camera lenses and two for binoculars. The price is certainly right and if they don't work as it appears they will there will be time to get something else. Thanks for posting the link.

Regarding welder's glass, I have read several comments that it's prone to excessive distortion - good for viewing, not for photographing, according to those sources. This is based on internet research, not personal experience.

This is one of the most reasonable solar filters I've found. https://solarfilterhub.com/collections/solar-filters/products/strong-large-optical-density-5-solar-filter-strong-br-font-size-4-encased-in-solid-black-frame-font Ordered and awaiting delivery. If you've not made a decision yet, check this out.

This is what my salesman from there recommended. I just picked up the canon 100-400 and 1.4 extended. I also got the filter and will try it out this weekend.
