After 9,206 miles and 27 days I am back from our cross country trip which started in Colorado for a wedding. I hope to be posting photos soon. My problem is in the file numbering of my Canon 80D. It started out as img.*** but then switched to mg.***, leaving off the "I". I don't know what caused this and IF it really is a problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Did the numbering scheme exceed some number and it ate the "I" to allow another digit?

I don't know. I will have to check. But I don't think so. I have only had the camera a short time and the problem started shortly into the trip. Thanks for the reply.

Hi,
I can't see why the numbering will have any impact on the photos. It may introduce a few more seconds to view the photos on a PC. I do know that when I switch a card from my Canon 7D MII to my 5D MIII or visa versa, without reformatting, each time a new folder is created. It really has no impact on the photos, but does take me a few seconds to find the correct folder.
Welcome back to NJ, neighbor.
Mark

Thanks. The "Welcome to New Jersey" sign when coming over the Delaware Mem. Bridge was a welcome sight. I always format my card in my camera when I remove pictures from it.

Thanks Jerry. Now I am not as worried as I was before your post. You always manage to come up with solutions to many questions asked on this forum.

I try. That was the only reference I could find about the img/mg switch.

If you have Lightroom you can save your selects as collections and export them to a designated folder, make a folder within a folder and change the individual pic number to Image, Select etc. Lightroom will export them as "Image-2.jpg" through "Image-50.jpg" or however many you export.

Or click on your folder with all the photos, click on the image "image-2" copy and paste "select" and number them anything you wish..."select-2, 2b, 2c, 3". To put your photos in any order you wish.

Do any of you automatically rename files on download? If so, how do you do it?

Actually that may be a good topic. I think I'll post it.

I don't use Lightroom. I use Adobe Bridge and PS. But I guess I can try it in Bridge. I always rename my days work to the location where I was at.

Is the first character missing or has it changed to an underscore? If your color space is sRGB the default is IMG and if Adobe RGB the first character is changed to an underscore. Just a thought as I am not familiar with the 80D.
