Going through some pictures from my recent trip home, I came across this shot of a gull and have become drawn to it. I love the blues of the water and the slight refection of the bird. I would love your honest critiques.
You forgot to post the picture.
-edit Sorry, it showed up a few seconds after I started the reply.
I like the sharpness of the bird and the beautiful natural curves of the wings and body. The soft colors and lines of the sea make it feel like a watercolor. Very relaxing to look at. good job.

Thank you! It is the water that really draws me in. I am just wondering if the floats in the water are a distraction.
I like it. I really like the hints of reflection of the bird. I'm wondering why you shot this as a vertical. Not being critical, just curious.

Isn't it strange how sometimes the gem of a shot is not one of the ones we think would be great at the time the photos are taken.
This is a really good image. I like the colors, the symmetry, the direction of the flight, and the subtleness of the reflection in the water. It is a perfect composition. It is just one of those feel good shots that looks like a work of art as well.
The only thing I might do would be to crop some off of the top, to move the bird up in the photo some to get it away from center a little bit more, but not much. However, having that room up there, gives you space for fitting most picture aspect ratios (5x7, 8x10, 11x14, etc), if you decide to print it without making it narrower, so it is good that it is there. (it is worthy of a print).

I am a dissenting voice. I really love everything about the shot except I like it better without the little bit of reflection of the bird. The color, motion and transition of the background from light to dark is beautiful enough to be its own image without the bird. With the bird it is truly special but the reflection of the bird detracts for me.

I actually shot this horizontal but I felt that the bird was lost and decided to crop it vertical. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you Jerry! I think I am going to play a little more on the crop and see what I like the best.

Thank you for your honesty! I feel somewhat distracted by some of the floaties in the water, but not sure if it is a distraction to others. I can see how one would feel that the reflection is a distraction. Thanks again!

I really like it, I would print and put in my Beach House, but of course I need to get the Beach house first.
I think I would like it cropped just above the reflections, however I know you liked the look of them.

I really like it for the reasons you stated in your original post. The soft blues in the water are mesmerizing. I very much like the gull and I think the reflection is unusual and really adds something special to the pic. My only wish is that the gull was not centered. Since this is so much about the water, I think a thirds location would have given more attention to the vast water with the lone gull sailing over it's beauty. Lovely shot.

Thank you Terry! I have looked at a square crop above the reflection and putting the bird a on the thirds, I do like it! Now I have a decision to make.

Thank you Nightski! I have been playing around with different crops and putting the bird on the thirds and I do like it - I just need to decide what I like the best.
