Dear hogs,

I've often had shots that were imported into Lightroom (6.5, standalone) but for some reason disappear from both the filmstrip and the grid view. I don't know if I'm fat-fingering some key and causing it, but Find All Missing Photos doesn't work, and Search doesn't find them either. If I try to import them again by file name, it says "already imported." Has anyone seen this? If so, what's the cause, and how do I get them back in the catalog? The files are clearly still there in the original directory.

If you have confirmed via a system utility that the files are indeed still in the directory in which you placed them, you should be able to re-Import them. However to do so, in the right hand panel of the Import dialog, you need to deselect (uncheck) "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates".
Like others who have responded, I have thousands of images in LR and the only time I have had an issue is when I did something to the files (moving, deleting, copying, or renaming) outside of LR. But I learned long ago that this is a no-no.

Thanks to all who replied, especially to jeep daddy for the screen shot. It was my oversight - I was looking for "All Photographs" at the top, not on the left side. I went there, used the search function there, and was able to find the missing files and restore them to the catalog. This is a great community, with lots of good help and advice.

Best regards,

Jay

I've asked him point-blank if he has used the software, and Adobe products in general. No answer, but, sure as sure is, here he is, front and center, trashing again...I knew I'd see him the second I saw "Lightroom" in the topic list. Funny. Really. And predictable...

Yes I have had this happen. It is usually due to a leftover filter. Clear all your filters and the missing photos should reappear.

You are forgetting to control where the import is being placed, most likely by simply leaving the last import directions in place, so the import is being imported into the catalog in some place that you are unaware of. If you click on all photos and scroll you can locate them, click on one of the photos you want to find, then right click and click on go to folder and then you can move the folder where ever you want it to be placed from within LR. Read everything prior to hitting import and you will have fewer problems.

Problems with Lt Room seems to be a oft repeated topic. When I looked it up in adverse effects listed by World Health Organization, Lt Room is responsible for High Blood Pressure, and Acute Anxiety. If one uses UHH Search "Light Room Problem" there is a long list. Why use the problematic parts when one can easily set up file system that fits their own thinking patterns. In my Photo HD, you look for Flower photos in "Flowers" .... sorry seems KIS, Keep it Simple, logical!

Yes, I will concede that LR and PS are excellent "classic" editing programs, that are to the point of being an cult, in an expanding world of modern excellent photo editors which sell for a lower price with a less stressful learning ramp.

It is, more often than not, operator error, not program error.

I had this problem a couple of times when the computer automaticly shutdown when I left it on while going to eat or had a long distraction during work. For some reason when I opened the catalog the next time it opened an older catalog that didn't contain the latest photos. Search for catalogs to open when you log on and see if the exist in the other catalog. If you find that one, then rename it with a unique name and in preferences chose the catalog to open each time you log on. Only takes a second to make sure which catalog you are opening. Hope this helps! Drove me crazy for a while and happened three times to me but no problem since I changed the things I mentioned.
