Delighted to be up and away with my first request. This forum seems like a very useful place.

So that's the flattery out of the way!!

I'm 95% certain that the next camera for me is a Nikon D750. To replace a very tired Panasonic DMC-FZ8.

Main uses will be landscape and spontaneous outside wildlife shots and pictures of the dogs in the house; we have six here in Oregon, down from 12 when we first moved here.

I want a supplier that will allow me to check that the camera is a comfortable fit in the hand, and I don't imagine it won't be, but if I don't find it comfortable will allow me to return it for a full refund within a few days.

Also should I go for the Nikon 24-120 mm VR lens to get me started?

Many thanks in advance,

PB

Without a doubt, I'd deal with B and H. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/

Be aware that they are no open from sundown on Friday through Sundown on Saturday, along with an assortment of holidays, which they list on their site.

Oh, and good choice on equipment.

Where in Oregon are you? If near to Portland there is a huge camera store downtown. I'm sure they would have that camera in stock. Besides checking for fit, you could walk away with that camera in your hands immediately :) No Oregon sales tax and no shipping. No need to worry about paying return postage if you don't like it.

WELCOME to UHH.

B&H is my first and only choice. 24-120 is a great lens. Depends upon what photography you will do.B&H return policy is outstanding and only sell USA warranty items and not grey market which does not cover a USA warranty.

In Merlin, Oregon. A few miles North-West of Grants Pass. We moved here in 2012 and just love it.

I purchased a D750 about six months ago. I was shooting with a Nikon 24-70 f2.8 and the results were very good but I wanted a little more range so I could shoot a wedding or event with a single lens. The lens I looked at was the Nikon 24-120 but found about the same number of people disappointed with that lens and those who loved it. I then decided on the Sigma Art lens 24-105 which got almost universal thumbs up. I have never taken as consistently sharp photos as with that combo. The 750 and Sigma lens act like they were made for each other. Also the 400.00 difference in price was nice as well. When you use the ML-L3 remote there is an added bonus. If you depress the button once it will lock the mirror in the up position and a second push takes the photo. I found the lack of a mirror slap definitely will give you sharper photos. If you are buying new, the places I would recommend are B&H, Adorama, Cameta, or Mid West. If you want to buy a referb (the three I have purchased couldn't be told from a brand new camera), I would go with Cameta. They offer a Nikon referb (that means referbed by Nikon) with a 1 year warranty while others (including Nikon) only offer a 90 day warranty. I hope this helps in your decision making. The D750 is so good I cannot see myself buying another camera unless an equivalent model with the same attributes comes along in a mirror-less version.

I would recommend B&H photo. I went to their 4 day Optics seminar a few months ago so I visited their store in NYC multiple times. They are great people and very knowledgeable and helpful. I witnessed first hand that they have a very good return policy. Absolutely stay away from 42nd Street Photo (NYC also) where I bought my D750 (which I love). I was lured in by a very low camera and lens package. When I placed the order, they told me I needed these $200 memory cards (120 mb/sec) for the camera to work properly and these extra high capacity batteries. (They probably improve performance if you do video, but I don't.) When I got the manual and saw that the ones I already had were listed as compatible and would work fine, they would not allow me to return just the overpriced add-ons for a refund. They wanted me to box up the entire outfit and send it back.

If I could only have 1 lens for this pup, I would get the Nikkor 28 - 300. I use it 90% of the time. I did get a Tamron 150-600mm which has taken some great shots, but is a beast to carry around. It allows me to get better shots of animals before they bolt from me trying to get too close.

That's noted. But I have just put the phone down from speaking with Mendy at B&H and have placed my order for the D750 together with the 24-120mm lens. Currently out of stock just now but should be in my hands next week. I have 30 days to return the camera if I don't like it!

So grateful for the assistance - thanks!!

Adorama and Cameta are as good as B&H and don't close on religious days.

Cameta is a little better if you buy refurb as they automatically provide one year warranty.

Read the return policies on each. I think all allow 30 days with no restocking fee but you need to verify for yourself.

I've owned an assortment of Nikon DSLRs, and they all feel fine. Any reputable dealer will allow a return, although you may have to pay return postage.

I have purchased from Adorama and Cameta over the years. Had one very minor issue with each, both resolved the issues promptly to my complete satisfaction. Among other purchases, I bought a used Nikon F4S many years ago from Adorama. Condition was listed as Very Good, but I could hardly tell it from new. About 2 years ago I bought a refurb D750 from Cameta, couldn't be happier.

I have purchased lenses and accessories from both with total satisfaction.
