If you really want to piss them off, use flash.

And the reason you want to piss them off?

I enjoy photographing photographers
I have a small collection of photographs of photographers. I like to take the people who lean back while
taking a picture.

Ah yes, the old 34-35mm zoom lens.

To refresh memories of what a professional photographer looks like.

What a waste. There's so much gear to think about, she can't think straight enough to record images!

(Yes, I get the joke. But we've all seen folks like that.)

The photog probably assumed you would end up shooting his setup, as others have already responded. Maybe, hang around until the shoot is over, then ask him.

I have no interest talking to them and I don't think they want to talk to me either.

I can't be sure but it seems that they don't want me to study how they work. While other type of artists like those who do portrait on the sidewalk are rather proud of the fact you watch and photograph them working.

Why don't you try to be a little more discreet about it so they don't get annoyed.

Why should I be discreet? I stay 15- 25ft from them. Don't use flash.
I don't feel right photographing a homeless person I found in the park without their permission but I don't think I need permission from a photographer. They just don't like it but they know the law.

For me, personally, I do not care if anyone takes a "snap-shot" of me when I am working. I am so damn involved it capturing the intended image to make a photographic print of I really do not notice. Just as long as They are Operating their camera the way that will get the best image - of me - and anything else. If they wish me to "pose" for them ... That is another matter. And Please = IF ANY person is recognizable, Do NOT sell any image of ANY person without their say so. Not just Photographers -- ANYONE.

The ONLY exception is that of "Street Photography" in a Mass of the population On The Common Street.

Photographers are among the most self-conscious people on earth... especially PEOPLE photographers. We have scrutinized the faces and bodies of countless individuals, noting every attractive and repellant feature of each. We worry that others will be doing the same to us, and that they may be unfairly judgmental!

It is fairly difficult to photograph people in a truly flattering way, and most of us don't want to settle for honest images of ourselves.

Thanks Burk. The type of photographers I am interested in taking pictures of are those who do PEOPLE photography.
