Oh how little faith you have.

With good reason. Asking here can be an adjunct to your suggestion.

I have an old Tilt-all that I have packed in checked luggage. It set off their bells and whistles early on in the TSA thing so now they search my luggage every time I fly. No big deal, they always leave a polite note telling me why. I just wish I could learn to pack as well as they do.

Of course it is that easy but the old adage applies: The answer to your question is dependant upon the official to whom you ask it!

Yup.Had to explain the rules to the ticketing agent on an Aeromexico flight. I was flying BizClass and he was trying to charge me for an extra bag. Actually pulled up the website on my smartphone to explain it to him! ...and this is the ticketing agent in BizClass checkin !!

I just back from from a trip to Florida yesterday and asked a TSA agent about traveling with tripods as carry on. He had to ask another agent ,but they say their are no restrictions on traveling with tripods.

Leading on from my point earlier. If agent #1 was on his own and does not know the answer, he will default to 'NO'. If you are lucky to get agent #2 you will be allowed, but, is he correct? What will agent #3 say if there happens to be a further check down the line, after a transfer perhaps?

Check the airlines carry on requirements, it is not just about size but also weight. I recently flew from Thailand to Cambodia and the weight limit for carry on was 15lbs. With some of the better luggage today, they can weigh half that much empty. As mentioned already, I checked it in, put TSA approved locks on the case and all was fine for Angkor Wat.
Unfortunately because of the weight limitation I was unable to bring all of the gear I would have liked to.

That is odd they called it on a weight limit, who was it that put the restriction on it? I've not flown into Cambodia but I do Thailand at least once a year and never had an issue until last year when I went through Taiwan (first time going through Taiwan) and they said my 18 inch tripod was too long not too heavy. No big deal, I just check it and all was fine. I had plenty of time and the team at the airport was plenty helpful. I made sure is was checked on the return trip. So I guess the answer is to use check baggage and not worry about it. :-) Thanks for the tip.

TSA website have a checkmark for tripod (no details) in carry-on luggage but I want to make sure if anyone has travelled lately carrying a tripod in airplane cabin. I just don't want to throw away a good tripod if confronted with situation in security check.
I want to bring with me meFoto travel tripod flying out to Vancouver next week.
Thanks in advance and appreciate your kind responses.

I always pack my Tripod in baggage check with a TSA lock. Generally it fits into my roll around suitcase along with clothes etc. I ALWAYS hand carry my cameras/lenses/etc. and place that bag under the seat in front of me. The bag is large enough from 2 cameras, 3 lenses plus the 2 on the cameras (depending on size of lenses), and most accessories. I (in the past) have everything in carryon checked at the x-ray and place batteries, memory cards etc. in zip-lock bags and put them in the trays for easy inspection. Batteries all have the manufacturer's plastic cover over the contacts. So far, I've never had an issue at security and I fly (either in the US or overseas) 4 or 5 times per year.

It was on AirAsia's website. In fact I put the tripod in the check in thinking I would fine to find out on the return flight it was full and before I boarded I had to check in my carry on, they said pull out your laptop and cameras which I did, fortunately everything appears to be OK. Only 1 1/2 hour flight from Phuket to Siem Reap, small plane and I boarded in Zone 8, by the time I was boarding all of the overheads were taken.

A friend and I just returned from a photo trip to Montana. Checked one tripod in a roll duffel bag and the other as a carry on. No problems with either.

My tripod always goes in my checked baggage. Have to remove the head to make it fit however that has not caused any problems. I always wrap the head in t shirts. Also make sure the ribber feet extend past the pins on the feet so I do not tear or puncture my luggage.

Just completed a 10 days trip to China, I carried my tripod as check in and stored it in the cabins without any issues.
