TSA website have a checkmark for tripod (no details) in carry-on luggage but I want to make sure if anyone has travelled lately carrying a tripod in airplane cabin. I just don't want to throw away a good tripod if confronted with situation in security check.
I want to bring with me meFoto travel tripod flying out to Vancouver next week.
Thanks in advance and appreciate your kind responses.

I always pack mine in the checked baggage with a TSA lock in case they wan't to inspect the bag. I haven't been able to find specific recommendations one way or another.

I always pack my tripod(s) and tripod heads in my checked luggage. Less for me to carry on board

Checking the tripod in will be a better choice than grappling with it through the passenger check-in.

A tripod shouldn't be an issue if it fits inside your carry on luggage and meets the size specifications. Otherwise it may need to checked as outsize baggage. People fly with golf clubs and skis, but not in the cabin. I have a tripod that will fit inside my roll-a-board suitcase and it has never caused a problem either domestically or internationally when used as carry on and placed in the overhead bins.

Good luck

It depends on the TSA Employee and the current real or imagined threat level. I've checked monopods on in carry on, and I've had to remove them and place them in checked on luggage.

Thats really what I'm worried about, so I'll just pack it in my checked luggage. I'll be able to fit a 12 inch long tripod.

Have a wonderful weekend to everyone !

All you really need to do is call the airlines and give them the dimensions of your tripod and ask if you can carry it on. IT IS REALLY THAT EASY TO CHECK. Just a phone call, now, how difficult could that be?

I always pack my tripod in my checked baggage just so I don't have to worry about it. If you do put it in your carry on baggage it might make a difference to TSA if the tripod/monopod is carbon fiber or aluminum. Somehow I would think that a carbon fiber tripod might not ring any alarms when they x-ray you carry on luggage and might not view a carbon fiber tripod as potential weapon. Nevertheless, putting you tripod in you checked baggage eliminates the worry.

Of course it is that easy but the old adage applies: The answer to your question is dependant upon the official to whom you ask it!

I traveled with an 18 inch (folded) tripod from South Korea to Chiang Mai, Thailand last summer. Korea and Thailand let it go in check baggage but Hong Kong and Taiwan did not; to get through those two it had to go in check baggage, they said it was too long.
