I have recently switched to bb focusing (Canon 5D MK IV). Genrerally i find it very convenient, but I am having an issue if I use either an electronic or cable remote) They seem to be linked to the conventional shutter button and if I uses bb and try to reframe I have to hold down the AF ON button which seems to defeat the purpose behind using the remote release. I could change back to shutter release when I am on a tripod, but for now at least I prefer to use one method. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you disabled AF with the shutter button?

The OP states he has a Canon Camera. I may be wrong, but I do not believe you can have back button activated focus set up and still have half press shutter button focus. Somebody provide me with information that this is wrong as I would like to know when I am in error.

On the 5D Mk IV you can set both the shutter button and the AF-ON buttons to AF. However, if you want to BBF whilst the shutter button also has AF you must press and hold the AF-ON button (or whichever button you have assigned to AF) whilst the shot is taken.

I have read your post several times trying to understand it. When you state "you can set both the shutter button and the AF-ON buttons to AF" do you mean at the same time or are you saying either can be set to AF.

Both at the same time:
Menu/C.Fn3:Others/Custom Controls/
set both 'Shutter Button Half Press' and 'AF-ON' to 'AF Start'

If you want autofocus to work when connecting and using a remote shutter release to a Canon camera you must reactivate the shutter button to focus. It's very easy and to do since there is a custom function choice on the LCD and you have a touch screen. With the press of the Q and the custom function icon and one more press of the shutter button icon you can reactivate the focusing of the shutter button. You really need to be accustomed to changing this so that if you want to let someone else take your picture with your camera, the shutter button will function properly and you won't have to teach them how to do BBF.

I shoot Nikon with BBF -- and I always (even before BBF) switch to manual focus for tripod work. (I sometimes actually use AF, but switch to MF before actually taking the shot).

Often when shooting with a remote (wired or wireless)... you DON'T WANT the camera to refocus! So in many cases it's ideal to have BBF set up, where the camera won't focus.

If you wanted, you could easily set up one of the Custom Modes (C1, C2 or C3) to re-enable AF at the shutter button.

Some advice to newbies:

Use the Quote Reply button when replying back to someone, that way they know what you are commenting back about.

Always upload jpg images
Check the box the says Store Originals so we can see the EXIF

Welcome to the Hog.

Oh, and ignore some of the more gruff comments here. You sometimes need some thick skin when people make rude comments.

Exactly. I do not understand what the OP is trying to shoot that requires a remote release and cannot be pre-focused. Say a portrait of a large group. You focus, stand back and press the remote release. OP, what are you shooting?
