In the spring of
1959 my ship, the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure, was tied-up alongside the USS Forrestal at Norfolk Naval base. As luck would have it, I met up with one of the crew of the Forrestal at the EM's club where he invited me to go on board his ship.

I jumped at the chance and was impressed at the size of it compared to my ship which was a light-fleet carrier (20,000 tons).
It certainly was the largest ship I ever boarded.

Lot of Navy aviation history parked on that flight deck. Is that a RA 5 Vigilante parked just forward of "Tillie''?

Yes, we had A-3 Sky Warriors, A-4 Skyhawks, RA-5C Vigilantes, A-6 Intruders, E-3 Hawkeyes, and F-4 Phantoms.

Very nice. I believe she was the last carrier that fit in the Panama Canal.

Thanks Phred.
No we didn't fit through the Canal. When we went to WestPac we had to go around the Cape of Good Hope and through the Indian Ocean.

Yes, it was BIG, though nothing compared to today's carriers.
