I noticed my A6000 was not uptodate as it had firmware version 2.0 and 3.2 is latest. So I decided to upgrade the firmware this afternoon...everything went smoothly until, just before completion of the upgrade, when an error message appeared and the process was aborted. After that, I was unable to even turn on the camera! Dead in the water! Sony support really tried but couldn't correct the problem and so I am now facing a camera repair. I am considering just selling the camera "as is" on Ebay and purchase a replacement (I"ll be sure it is 3.2!!).

You may want to try doing the firmware again on the dead camera. You may get lucky. Make sure the firmware is completely done. If this doesn't work. I have no other solutions. Good luck.

Why don't you send it to Sony repair so they can properly flash the firmware.

Try here for advice on how to unbrick your A6000
http://www.1scan.co.uk/sony-a6000-firmware-update-brick-mode/

If that doesn't work, Google 'unbrick A6000' for other suggestions.

Try here for advice on how to upgrade properly.

Let us know if this worked. I am due an update but I have been afraid to try in case I end up like you.

There seem to be a few problems with Sony cameras, including firmware updates that render the camera useless, overheating, etc. Inexcusable for a camera in this price range and from a large company such as this.

That is a very good question.
If the battery was not as 100%, it can happen very easily with the Sony's.
Not all batteries are created equal.

Sorry to hear that Tinplater, maybe fate is prodding you to go for a 6300/6500.

Firmware updates can be a risky business but I've never had a problem with a Sony update and I've had a lot of Sony cameras. Still, there's always a first time for everything.

Yes. I sold my RX100 cameras for several reasons, one of which being worry about future reliability. I got an A6000 on sale, and I use that when I want a compact. I'm not happy with what I've heard about Sony service and support. I think I'll skip the updating.

Don't rush into that. If you don't get a a solution here, try other sites.

Not only that, all the a6xxx series sensors suffer from serious banding issues. Sony knows this. I had two a6000s and thought it was a sensor defect, until I did some research and tried out a number of a6000 bodies. All with the same banding, so then I tried an a6300--even worse! I am now using a NEX-7. I am truly disappointed in Sony. I have had Nikons for years without a single problem. My Sonys are full of issues. I'm sorry I ever started with NEX. If I had it to do over again I would definitely go Panasonic or Fuji or Samsung.

Is it time to have a discussion about replacing Sonys with real cameras and should it be Canon or Nikon? 🙀

(Tries to sneak away without being noticed.....)

Sure, switch to either one if you want to go down market.
