Hedgehog Tree

I've been lurking on here for years now, but never post any pictures because I don't have a camera (just an iPhone). I was out today and saw this tree. The little things dangling looked like upside down hedgehogs to me. The tree was covered with them. I don't have a clue what kind of tree it is. So I just call it the "hedgehog tree".

They look like hedge apples to me. Are they about baseball-sized? They usually fall off the tree when they are still green, but some do hang on.

Is it a sycamore tree? They have golf ball-sized seed pods.

Could be. Since the tree didn't have leaves yet, I couldn't tell.

Is the bark whitish and seems to peel? If so, it's a sycamore. If the tree has tight, dark, normal-looking bark, then the answer is sweet gum.

I know it's not a sweet gum because we have them in our back yard. I guess I'll have to head back to Olive Garden and see if I can peel off the bark.

Got lots of whippings from switches from this type of tree.
