Very interesting web site, whichever way you lean. Of course if your married to digital, don't go here.

You may get swayed to "FUN".

Approach with an open mind, please.

Another way to make some money in photography. "I still shoot film.org" pays money for you to write articles for them. The link explaining what they pay and pay for is on the home page. Write For I Still Shoot Film.

May not seem like much, but it's a way to get published.

I'll have to check this out. Can't from work, and it's a slug to load on my cellphone. I still shoot film, more than digital this year, so far. Just posted a couple on UHH.

Oh, and Ralph, I roll my own, 35mm that is.

I recently sold my woodshop and bought a couple of new digital cameras, thinking I would enjoy going to back to my old photography hobby. Almost immediately, I realized that I missed the old film days. Of course film stock is in short supply and very expensive, processing is hard to find, (and very expensive) and I had traded all my film cameras years ago for then state-of-the-art digitals, so I went to a camera store and got a Nikon FM.

I don't expect to shoot a lot of film, but I will save it for those times when it seems appropriate. When will that be? I have no idea; I guess it will be whenever the urge hits me. When we moved 15 years ago I donated my darkroom to the art center where I was a member, and there is no place in the current house to put one, so I'll send all my film to a lab and then scan it myself. It will never again be all-film for me, but I will enjoy the reminiscing...

Terry, I'm also a film shooter, exclusively black and white. I shoot 135, 120, and 4x5. The availability of film is not an issue. As for cost, it costs me approximately $0.15/exposure-for 135
$0.85/exposure for 120
and
$1.50/exposure for 4x5
That includes processing.

As for color, since the age of digital, I rely on that for color photographs.

I'd sure like to know where you get film and processing that cheap. I believe I'm paying about .85 cents a frame for b&w 35mm. That's develop only...

Terry, it's quite simple. I process my film in my darkroom.

First off, I don't shoot color film, except for rare occasions. For color, I use digital. So, let's take a look at 35mm black and white processing. First off, I purchase Ilford HP5 which is currently listed on B and H for $89.99, So, let's say $90.00.

Ilfotec DD-X developer is $26.38 for one Liter.

Kodak Fixer is $12.95 to make one gallon.

The breakdown is such:
100 feet of 35mm film yields 18 rolls of 36 exposures. That is a total of 648 exposures.
Thus, $90.00/648exp=$0.14/exposure

With 1 Liter of developer, I can develop approximately 50 rolls of film, or 1800 exposures.
Thus, $26.38/1800 exposures=$0.02/exposure approximately

With 1 gallon of fixer, even if I limit it to doing the 50 rolls of film, is a cost of:
$12.95/1800=$0.01/exposure.

So, the final cost per exposure is $0.17. This is slightly higher than my initial post. The price of Ilfotec went up a bit.

I gave away my darkroom when we moved 16 years ago. Even if I wanted to do that again, I have no place in this house to set one up. If I shot only film all the time, a darkroom might make sense, but for one or two rolls a month it simply does not. I would need a serious modification to a room somewhere to get it light tight, I would need a place to store chemistry, I would need water. I don't think many casual or occasional film shooters would find a darkroom practical.
