Verizon or T-Mobile?

Thank you everyone for your timely and interesting responses. The main reasons for our desire to switch away from Verizon are: High costs (over $160/month) when all the taxes and fees are added in; and when traveling outside of the US, the extra charges ($30/phone) were immense. We are looking into T-Mobil because: we can port over our iPhones (6 and 5) at no charge; and their international (when traveling) calling is included in the price without any additional taxes or fees. Can any other carrier mentioned in you responses do the same (Straight Talk or Trac Fone)?

Verizon has better coverage, but the worst customer service. T-Mobile has great customer service and great prices. If you don't do much traveling or if your communications aren't super important then go with T-Mobile. If you work and communications must be the best go with Verizon.

I use Consumer Cellular. They operate on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks. They are also far less costly for a full unlimited subscription with no contract. You can buy a phone from them or bring your own. (I bought a used Samsung S5 on-line and they gave me a sim card.)

My first sim card was for Tmobile, but they didn't' have coverage in one area so Consumer Cellular provided me an ATT sim card.

I have verizon only because what they offer me is inexpensive: Two fliptop phones and two numbers for $53/month.
Right now I have no need for a smart phone.

T-Mobile really excels if you travel out of the country. Data is free pretty much all over the world and you can use Google Voice (Hangouts) or WhatsApp to make free (good quality) phone calls over WiFi. Cell calls are free in Mexico and Canada. I have a son who worked in Asia for a year and now lives in Europe and it's all he's ever had or needed. In-country calls are fine in most places; I think the quality depends on where you are. T-Mobile also has some very good pricing on family plans.

I had T-mobile since before cell phones. Had a pager with them before they were bought out by VoiceStream which was bought out by T-mobile. So, was with them for over 30 years. I have recently switched to Verizon because T-mobile only thinks about the new customer, never the faithful they already have. The coverage is only marginally better with Verizon, but I live out in the sticks and T-mobile was spotty at best. At least I have a signal all the time now. Cheers.

I would look at a coverage map of the areas you use the phone the most for each and see if there is much difference between the two.

My son passed away and I got his iphone. Although the TMobile Web site said it would work the techs in two TMobile stores were sure it would not. They put in a new sim card and proved it.

I took the sim card from my android and stuck it in. It works fine.

Verizon uses CDMA technology. T-Mobile uses GSM technology. Verizon has the best coverage, followed by at&t.

Thank you everyone for your timely and interesting... (show quote)

Any GSM phone can be used internationally. at&t and T-Mobile use GSM. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, which is pretty much only here in the U.S.

Well, we made the switch from Verizon to T-Mobile. I'll let you know in a little while how it went.

I use CRICKET, which is owned by at&t. GSM technology. I kind of think CDMA is better, but GSM is worldwide and you can usually unlock any GSM phone.

Update on the T-Mobile transfer: Was on T-Mobile for just a couple of weeks with very disappointing results. Many lost calls and no service in many areas around my home. We have since gone back to Verizon which works great in my area, though a bit more expensive.
