I know that there has been some discussion on this topic before but here goes:

I have an RB 67 ProS system and a Mamiya 645 and I have just about decided to take them to KEH and take what I can get but with the current chatter about Ektachrome coming back I am now more confused than ever.

My intent would be to shot film and scan the transparencies.
I have had some good results scanning my older images -both transparencies and negatives.

I would appreciate any input to help me decide.

Thanks
Bill

Maybe you should keep your favorite one and sell the other.

Bill,
If I were you i would hold off and not sell them to KEH.I would wait to see if the Ektrachome film does comes to market. Just like we learned they will not bring back Kodachrome.

Hmmm. As long as there is a good film lab available, I would be very tempted to keep at least one and use a digital camera for guide shots and set the RB or 645 accordingly and shoot. (Then you can coordinate the two using the digital as a control.)

My personal decision (I have an RB67 ProS also + numerous 35mm film bodies) is to keep the film cameras and process the film and (wet) print rather than scan. That gives me the attributes of film and silver halide prints, which I particularly like (and I admit, I enjoy the process). But if my ultimate destination is a digital image, I use my DSLR and skip the film/scan intermediate step. Although I can process color film/prints, given the convenience of digital and PP, I now limit my film work to B&W, where I think there is a visible difference for fine art prints.

If your intention is to shoot film and convert it to a digital file, I would say forget about it. With todays software you can pretty much make any digital image look like any kind of film, to a point.

If you really want to use film for the true film attributes, you need to carry the wet process all the way through.

I held on to my film cameras (35 and 2 1/4) when I bought my D1X. I held onto them for a while after getting a D2Xs Before adding a D300 I got rid of them all with the exception of a Nikon FM2. I knew by then that I wasn't going to use them. The FM2 looks cute sitting next to my current DSLRs.

Thanks to all for the quick replies.

After reading your thoughts I am beginning to realize that shooting film and trying to digitize the process isn't going to work.

Bill D. reminded me that shooting film really calls for a dark room to carry out the full process.

Sadly I sold off my dark room equipment about 3 years ago (Omega D5, dichro and condenser heads, and 3 lenses) and no longer have a good place to set up again.

Nostalgia can be hard to kick.

Bill[/quote] I would keep them , your not going it get much for them now , you should have solid years ago ,when they were worth something you missed by at least 35 years . But if it ever catches on big time or even small time ,any time in the future would better than now , I have a 645 pentax mint shape and 3 lenses flash etc about $5000 with the goodies
Filters and such , I would be lucky to get $2 or $300 : that's what a body sells for now , keep it

What are you talking about not going to get much for them now? If in good condition, the Mamiya 645 usually sells for $400-600 on eBay, and the prices are slowly and steadily rising. I regret I did not buy one when they were most affordable, about ten years ago.

Two questions: Do you need the money? Do you foresee using them in the future? A yes to either question should tell you what to do.

Does all this mean if I am in the market for a medium format camera such as these, I need to purchase now and not wait around?

I would answer some questions first. have you been using them over the last 5 yrs? have you been using them exclusively??? if so then you have already worked film substitutes. if you have been out of medium format for awhile then you'll need to do some research.

Would you enjoy the process? Some do; some don't. I am one who does...sometimes.....
