What is hard to understand: Overexpose so you get all the shadow detail and then back off the highlights in PP. Be careful you don't blow out the highlights.

Or even more simply: capture all the information in your scene. I don't think Ansel Adams invented that.

Or since it, more times than not, is not possible to capture both the highs and lows (the complete DR) figure out what is most important to you and make sure you get all that information.
Sometimes the highlights are more important sometimes the shadows.

And it took you 186 words and 985 characters (with spaces) to say that. Perhaps you should have posted a picture!

Or have used Twitter: #BrevityRules! Verbosity will be assimilated @Loquacious of Borg!

Hear Hear!! If I see more than four lines of script, I check on the name of the poster, and if it is familiar (as a writer of diatribe verbal diahorea) I just scroll down to the next post, without reading.

Hi, Steve,
You may be right, but I decided it might serve better if the graphic representation of the differences between ETTR and EBTR were presented in a thread different and distinct from this formless, uninformative chat the fails, in all substantive and explicit ways, clearly to differentiate the two, very different, and distinct concepts dealing with proper exposure of raw image data captures.
The stand-alone graphic can be found at:

Hi, Steve, br You may be right, but I decided it ... (show quote)

Not to disparage you or the concept, but the phrase "dog with a bone" comes to mind.

We have two cats. When one of my daughters is about to visit with her two cats, one-at-a-time I hold our cats on my lap and soothingly talk about being nice to other cats. Our cats purr - they like the attention - but as far as they're concerned, I might as well be saying blah-blah-blah. If I stand up and say "Food!", though, they lead me to their bowls in the kitchen.

I'm like our cats. My undergraduate study was as a math major with a physics minor. I can follow long discussions if I want to, but these days I prefer Twitter-like brevity. I find that most explanations relating to ETTR, both pro and con, here consist of long intimidating paragraphs - lots of long paragraphs per post. I have found that even if I ask a short simple question, posts which may be meant to respond typically consist of more torrents of words. If something is to be useful to me, and I'm guessing many others are like me, it needs to be expressed simply, low in word count and high in application.

And you are not guilty of violating your stated concept when you add all that unnecessary information about your cats? Then you compound the problem with unnecessary verbosity in the following paragraph.

"Verbosity" is not "unnecessary" if it adds to the overall image; the whole thing would have almost fit in a tweet. No, I think the whole thing fits the concept just fine.
