Has anyone had any experience with the Tamron 24-70 DI VC for a Nikon full frame DSLR? How does it compare with the Nikon equivalent lens? BIG difference in price!

Thanks for all opinions!

I don't own this lens yet. It goes for about $1200 from B&H. Reviews are good. Professional Photographer Matt Granger did a You Tube video on the Nikon, Canon, and Tamron 24-70mm lenses. He ranked Tamron in 3rd place, following Nikon and Canon. Although he didn't proclaim Nikon the winner, it was obvious it was Nikon. The Tamron also has a 6 year warranty too. Best bang for the bucks. IMO.

I use it myself primarily for the stabilization. Its a great companion to my Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 VC and my Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 VC. Never had a problem with any of them and the sharpness is terrific. As good as Nikon? close enough that neither I nor my customers can see a difference.

I have the Tamron 24-70, 70-200 and 150-600. I bought them to use with my Nikon D7000 and am using them with my D750. I am planning to purchase the 15-30 also. They are a big improvement over kit lenses.

Like the infamous 18-55mm kit lenses of the Canon and Nikon manufacturers? A dime a dozen lenses. But, the newer versions are not so crappy, as many claim. I own one, but prefer the 24-70mm.

It is no good for sports as the AF is too slow.

There is, and will always be a big difference in price between good and not so good. You can get the just previous Nikon 24-70 (non-VR) version on ebay, or used Mint for a very good price, I paid around $1050 for Mint in the box and I love this lens. The build is tankish. And, that said, there really is no Nikon equivalent lens, cause they are not equivalent in any way. Trust me on this one, ride with the brand.

Hey MT Shooter, what's your take on the Tamron ID problem (for fine tuning)? I often hear of 24-70 / 70-200 conflicts. Is the problem always there, or are do the IDs change and you just got lucky? You've also mention you have all the f/1.8 VC primes. Do they also have conflict problems?

Never had a conflict with any of my Tamron lenses on any of my cameras. Only the 70-200 required any tuning adjustment on my D500, and that was minimal at +3.

I guess if you've only needed an adjustment for one of them, then you've never had the opportunity for a conflict?

None of your customers brought this up?

For those that have the conflict, it sounds like there is no solution except to manually re-enter the appropriate fine-tune each time they change lenses to one of the affected Tamrons.

Out of curiousity, have you noticed if those lenses are correctly identified in the Exif data?

I have had no customers with issues that I am aware of, and I have a couple dozen customers using at least one Tamron on their D500's. All my Tamron show up properly except one, the Tamron 85mm F1.8 VC shows up as a Nikon brand lens, but the serial number shows up correct for the Tamron.

I have the Tamron 24-70 lenses super sharp but I have one issue with it ! I have to dial in -1 Stop on just about every shot. I'm shooting with d750 camera and it was a learning curve not to over expose Just what your histogram & you will be very happy with the results ! Also you will be saving some money by not buying the Nikon 24/70 vr.

Interesting.

Customers with only one Tamron would never see the problem though, right? You'd need to have at least two that needed a fine tune to have a potential conflict. The only ID conflicts I can remember hearing about were with the 24-70 & 70-200, but was curious if any other Tamrons had ID issues.

Thanks for the info MT Shooter.

I shoot several Tamron lenses on my Canon bodies. I've found the 24-70 to be a very good lens with better than average IS, or VC. Tamron does have a superior warranty over all the others with 6 years. This includes firmware upgrades, calibration etc. You will find the outer edges will possibly be a little soft, but that is easily edited, or cropped out. I've had a very good response with Tamron, and their repair department for sending lenses back. The problem is always fixed, and the lens comes back with updated camera data within the chip, and seems to focus faster. I would look at their SP lenses, and now they have come out with a docking device for certain lenses. Good Luck.
