I believe I mentioned this in another thread, perhaps on this site, recently. Be aware that farmers and ranchers can get touchy about photographing their crops and livestock. Think Government restrictions on yield, and PETA’s concerns. While it may be legal to take the pictures, you can get into more trouble - and not from the law - than you want if a property owner suspects your motives.

It's always good policy and polite to consult a property owner first before photographing their property. Put yourself in their shoes. Offer to email them a photo after and I'm sure you will be welcomed warmly.

Hi to all.new to this site.really like the give and take.very informative and real.shooting over 45 years, this never happened before.Live in Lancaster,PA.I pulled way over to side of road, put my flashers on.there was a old farmhouse I wanted to photograph,Christmas lights, nice setting etc.I was not close to the house, used a small telephoto lens.So engrossed in the shoot and did not realize there was a Police officer behind me.he wanted to know if everything was alright.it was, then asked me what I was doing.told him I was a photographer,he said he can see that, then asked if I had permission to take those pictures.I said no,he kind of backed off after that.did I do anything wrong here?been doing this for years, now not so sure anymore.it took all the fun out of it.sorry I took so long, would appreciate some input.thanks for your time

I am not a lawyer but I believe if someone decorates their house they want to share it and give of the Christmas spirit. If you are not on their property and take a photo of what is publicly visible and do not do it commercially or use it in a manner harmful to the owner there should be no problem.
My wife and I decorate each year for this purpose. Every year all year long when we go somewhere and need to give our address we usually get "So that is your home". We enjoy giving people joy and a sense of a Christmas card feeling in real life. We were asked to allow tours of the home for a charity fundraising and usually 700-800 would come to these. The year we did our home there were about 2,000 on the tour because people from around the country were curious about what the home looked like inside and had wondered for years and some for decades. So we do not mind and if you are in Williamsport, PA come to Fifth Avenue and Rural and enjoy, take photos or videos of all 4 sides.
We welcome you.

In Williamsport area I ask and get various answers from no to yes of the Mennonites and Amish around here.
It never hurts to ask.
BTW if it had Christmas lights "those people" do not have electricity to light lights.

I tried that once. Pulled up the drive to ask if I could photograph the windmill out front. The lady acted like she was scared to death to open the door. I wished I wouldn't have even tried.

Some people are scared of their shadow, sad to say.

True, but people can't be to careful. It was out in the country, right off the highway.

I created this scrum by photographing a bird. The trooper called
the border patrol to stop me and then pulled up later.

Near Area 51? Or what David Bailey might have referred to as a "bird"? That might also have caused a distraction!
