Traveling Nova Scotia and Newfoundland

Planning a trip that includes flying to Portland, ME, renting a car; taking the ferry to Yarmouth, NS. At that point traveling to Cape Breton and then taking the ferry to Newfoundland. Once there, we would drive on to St. John's and tour that area. Return would be pretty much the same way. Any recommendations for photo ops along the way, traveling in NS and Newfoundland highways, places to stay, etc. Going in July 2017. Planning way ahead. You thoughts, tips, etc. will be appreciated.

How far away from St. John's are you willing to go on a car trip? Portland Creek? All the way to L'Anse aux Meadows? I spent 8 days in Newfoundland at the end of July, early August 2016. I did not spend any time in St. John's itself.

I'm really open to any suggestions you may have. St. John's looked interesting to me as a starting point, but nothing firm on that. Your 8 day trip sounds really great. Would you mind sharing your itinerary? Thanks for your response.

Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia for photos of the village and lighthouse. Be sure to do the drive around the Cape Breton Highlands and stop in at Alexander Graham Bell home/museum. Try to spend at least half a day at Fort Louisburg.

All the back roads in Newfoundland are interesting.Take a ferry to some of the outer islands. The drive around Cape Breton is outstanding.

Celebrate Bastille Day with the French on the Island of Saint Pierre located off the coast of Newfoundland. The holiday is on July 14th. Fireworks, music and dancing await your arrival. Don’t forget your jacket as the weather can be cooler than you expect, especially on the ferry boats. Watch for icebergs, whales and all manor of sea life.

Thanks for the information. That sounds like a great event to attend. Coming from the south, packing for cooler weather is a pain, but noted that it is necessary. Thanks again.

Touring Cape Breton is definitely on my list as are the ferry rides to and from Newfoundland. Understand there are some fijord boat rides as well. Will be looking into them as well. I'm hoping to put together an itinerary based on yours and other Hogs input, so any info you can provide will be great. Thanks.

Thanks Keldon for your input. I should have mentioned that we've been to NS before, but have not seen the fort or Highlands. We did visit Peggy's Cove and the Bell Museum as well. Loved Peggy's Cove. Definitely will be touring the fort and highlands.

In 2013 I spent a couple of days in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I took a couple of canned tours including a visit to the Maritime Museum and a motorcycle side-car ride down to Peggy's Cove (fun!). My photos of that trip are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/albums/72157635104740318/. I also visited Halifax in 2011 and those photos are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157627435768887/. On that trip I also visited Sydney, Nova Scotia: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157627557267078/. In 2005 I made an 85-day 11,750-mile auto trip that included driving from Maine up through the Maritimes and Newfoundland to Labrador. Relevant parts of that trip photos are in these Albums: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631915274197/, https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631923006097/, and https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631939960973/. I apologize for the presentations--my postings to Flickr® are more for my enjoyment and sharing with friends, not proof of my photographic ability.

You're welcome! My trip photo Collections are intended to preserve a record of where I've been, both so friends can "travel" with me, and as a means to resurrect memories later. Because of those objectives, I am not particularly selective in what I post (from a quality standpoint).
