Yeah, they're struggling. You have to sell a lot of expensive cameras to be profitable, but people aren't buying them. If they're not big and rich, they can't do the R&D to introduce new products. If camera companies sold their products for 25% more, they'd be in better shape, but only if people were willing to pay more - and they aren't. People don't need cameras, but they need food, clothing, gasoline, etc. I'm glad I'm retired.

True, and for a lot of people, their camera phones are "good enough".

I think as you get older, downsizing, home, cars, and expensive equipment is no longer that important.the generation coming up use their phones.when I gave up my medium format cameras I knew I would never go down that " road " again.

I was thinking (and I get in trouble when I do). Nikon MIGHT save a lot of money by moving their headquarters from New York City (Melville Long Island) to somewhere that the property is considerably less expensive and cost of living for the employees is cheaper. If they moved to Delaware for instance, there would be no sales tax, no state taxes and the cost of living would be significantly lower for the employees. But, Delaware is a fairly easy drive to NYC and is connected by high speed train (not to mention air travel). Langhorne, Pa. would also be an option as their call center is already there. They could also move their Los Angeles operation to Arizona, Nevada or somewhere on the west coast and get similar results. I'm sure they could cut the salaries but the net effect on the employees that made the move MIGHT be a raise considering the cost of living. I don't know what the cost of moving the entire (or nearly entire) operation would be but it might also have some tax benefits as well as some incentives that the recipient location might provide. I lived in New Haven CT, Warminster Pa, and traveled to NYC often and it was MUCH cheaper to live in both places (many live in CT and take the train to NYC or Long Island daily). The cost of the property would probably be a lot more cost effective in other east coast and west coast locations.

At the time they settled there, I bet the property and taxes were much lower. Suffolk County was more rural and less built-up then. Of course, they could always move to Mexico.

Then they wouldn't be Nikon USA, lol. But as I said, there are plenty of places in the same general area that would greatly reduce their overhead. Or, they could move the corporate headquarters for Nikon USA to Florida and really give their employees a treat by removing them from all that winter weather but keeping the company on the east coast. Tampa and Orlando have UPS, FedEx and USPS shipping hubs and cost of living is great compared to NYC. There call center was, for a while in Santo Domingo or somewhere like that and they were getting horrible reviews for support so they moved it to the Philly area and greatly improved the service. They could (should) probably move the LA facility (again) to Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle and get cost savings and tax breaks/incentives for the move. (same with NYC). Not to mention that some of the Nikon employees in both areas MIGHT refuse to move and they could be RIFFED and replaced with workers in the new location at a reduction of salary.

Sure they would, just with a different mailing address.

Lots of "American" companies have their headquarters in countries that are friendlier financially.

According to the video I think they are closing down their medical sales overseas. They couldn't break into the market.

True, but they already tried that offshore thing with their call center. It was a disaster and they spent quite a bit of money moving it back, not to mention the downtime keeping customers from getting "bad" advice from there while they were getting ramped up in PA. They started training the PA staff 12 weeks before pulling the plug on the offshore group. They brought the people that had decent to good camera experience online after 2 intensive weeks of prep and then brought in the others as they caught on. I was fortunate to be working for Nikon Professional services and got to see the transfer from a distance (sort of) but spent 3 weeks with them helping to train. The second group spend 2 weeks on the phones listening in while the first group handled live calls to see how it was "supposed" to be done. This is not to say that the first group (or any group since) has gotten everything right, but MOST of them know to pass on anyone or any problem that they are not absolutely sure of the answer. Most understand that every call CAN be a learning experience. The offshore people just wanted to move on to the next call and didn't care whether the answer was correct or just got the people off the phone.

I have nothing against offshore folk but it will take me a while to learn Urdu or whatever it is they are inflicting on me!
But having said that, the A...h who tried to tell me my computer was reporting an error did understand my ''f... o..'' and went on to the next call.

You are speaking of the U.S. Distributor, not the parent Corporation in Japan. Apples and Oranges, eh?

Yes but the US company is supported my Nikon Japan. Nikon also has "high end" spaces in Tokyo, London, Paris, and most if not all of the other regions. They probably need to look at those properties and see if they can do better.
Fortunately, I already have my retirement from Nikon US and all I have to worry about is stock prices.
