Travesty (Randy) does some amazing still life images and he makes them look simple. What I know is that in this photo genre you have total control over your light, your composition, background, colors...its all on you. And if its unbalanced, uninteresting or missing impact, well that's on you, too! Travesty did a still life image not long ago, Uncle Al. You got to know this character by a few well chosen objects that represented "Uncle Al". I thought I'd give it a try, see how much one could learn about a fictional character with just a few objects.

CarlySue, 1st of all thank you for the huge compliment, because being an inspiration at any degree is always a compliment to me.. I know you have looked deep into many of my still life images and at times came out with more meaning than I originally put in, so thank you for that....

With that being said, I really like the 1st composition a lot and the the 3rd comes in a close second... I think the yellow contrasted on the black really makes it for me! One thing I have learned over the years now is to stay true to your vision.. Many times others give great advise and critique, but use with caution.. There are many that will always try to make your image their own.. I am very stubborn in that regard. I think you are on the right track with the 1st image and a great Homage to your Aunt.. :)

Well done Carla. You succeeded ...... it made me stop and look a second and third and fourth time.

Any time you get someone to linger even for a few seconds is truly a success, I think. Thank you for stopping and giving this a generous amount of your time! I really appreciate that.

Very nice work!

Tradio! How nice to have you stop by and for leaving a kind note! I just spent the past 15 minutes taking a look at your past topics and am so sorry I missed them at the times of their posting! Wonderful photography! I've always wanted to stand in the middle of those bridges that cross the Ohio River and get those shots but traffic is always a detriment. How'd you do that? And appears you've done some still-life images as well. I just added you to my "buddy list", another Ohioan!

What a wonderful complement, laugh! Can never out-clever a raccoon, tho' but I appreciate your complements! These set ups are fun and you can just let them sit, taking things in and out until you like it.

The still life queen has returned. Interesting set. I like 1 and 3 the best.

I'm glad you looked in and found some interest, sterrill. I realize that still-life as a genre isn't everybody's cuppa, but sometimes it'll speak to some.
truth be told, I probably shouldn't have posted #3, it was too much like #1. I should have tried to come up with a totally different idea for #3 or just posted 2. But it was late last night. That's my excuse

Carla, now why am I not surprised to see such a brilliant post from you? This is amazing in every way, and from one who is very familiar with elderly parents, aunts and uncles and their ways, I'd say you've woven character into these fictional people and made them come alive.

Most excellent, Carla! My favorite here is number one, love the sunny disposition of this, and I'd say the composition and light was just right! But each has its charm, and you succeeded admirably!

Thank you! Thank you, TP!! I agree that those sunflowers against the dark bg just dominate the whole post and that makes it my fav as well. I'm also glad you noticed the lighting, I do struggle trying to get that right, especially where there are objects that pick up reflections--they are killers!
I'm so glad to see you back and posting. What a horrific month you all have just gone through. You had quite a few prayer warriors on site for sure!!
