Fellow Hoggers, I have been reading the posts for a couple years, This is my first post. For background, I am 73 retired, been taking shots starting back in the film 120/620 days then graduated to Nikon 35mm. When Nikon went digital so did I. First Nikon digital was 6 meg pixels.
Ok the reason for my post is for help. The wife and I are going to New Mexico for 10 days in mid October. We are looking for sites to take pictures, really want to get some good shots of Indian ruins, cliff dwellings. I will be using my Nikon D7100 caring two lenses, Nikon AF-S 18-300mm 3.6-6.3 GED VR and a Tokina ATX PRO SD 11-16 F2.8 (IF) DX II. The wife ( A beginner ) will be using a Nikon D3200 E/W Nikon AFS 55-300 4.5-5.6 GED VR and a Nikon DX AFS 18-55mm 3.5-56 G VR. I think she will be using the available auto modes on the camera. We will have two tripods. We will be driving a 4x4 vehicle. Really appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks Carl

I was going to suggest Mesa Verde in southern Colorado. But, that's not on the path from a Texas to New Mexico.
Great cliff dwelling tho.

Being retired and without any real travel agenda, we could swing up there. we were to going Taos which is near the Colorado border. Thanks for the suggestion.

Take I20 to I10 to southern New Mexico. These are some sites to visit, in the order I would go coming from the south-east.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (W of El Paso)
Pecos National Historical Park (NE of Albuquerque)
Sandia Peak (at Albuquerque)
Jemez Mountains (N of Albuquerque)
Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument (N of Albuquerque)
Bandelier National Monument (N of Albuquerque)
Valles Caldera National Preserve (N of Albuquerque)
Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (Taos Gorge, N of Albuquerque)
Bravos Cliffs (way N of Albuquerque)
Cumbres-Toltec Scenic Railway (way N of Albuquerque)
Chaco Canyon (way NW of Albuquerque)
Shiprock (way NW of Albuquerque, near Farmington)
Bisti Badlands (way NW of Albuquerque, near Farmington)

Agree with Carlsbad Caverns, Sandia Peak (take the tram up), Bandelier, Taos Gorge (not sure if we saw the same spot so won't comment - seems like there was a murder there a few months before we visited). How do you get close to Shiprock? Went all around it but couldn't see any road to direct us to a closer view to this huge monolith. Mesa Verde is nice too as an earlier poster said - worth the extra day to travel there. The one place we went to I would not recommend is Four Corners - not much there other than say you "been there, done that". Someone else was going to Chama a couple days ago - a nice bright green spot to drive to. We didn't take the narrow gauge train but it is a nice sight to see coming into this small picturesque town. Taos is okay but you will have to pay to take photos there (unless that changed).

Go to Chaco Canyon. It is off the beaten path, and you will probably spend an hour on the 25 mile road in {rumor says they keep it primitive to lower tourist traffic}, but it is well-worth the bother. This was the first "World Heritage Site" in the U.S. {same list as the Pyramids}, center of the cliff-dweller culture.

That's a pretty good list, I would add just a few more;
Abo Ruins Salinas National Monument East of Belen
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge On I25 just south of Socorro
If you're a fan of western history there's the town of Lincoln that is pretty much the same as when Billy the Kid hung out there.
(I beleive that should be the Brazos cliffs)

I think there are some geysers in New Mexico, check if they could be included in your trip. Of course there is also Roswell with all the mysteries, probably you will not get a chance to photograph any of them. Also many years ago I was heading for Silver City as I thought that might be interesting place to visit. But never got there because some guy trying to drive a car for the first time crossed my way and crashed my car. But that was a fun story after all that I remember just as well as if I had managed to do what I was heading for.

Google Hovenweep. Wife and I went there and loved it. Not that much to see on the way but worth it when you get there.

We may have to stay longer than we thought. We do appreciate all the information provided. Just glad that I am not shooting film. It would cost a fortune. An then throw out 90 %. That would not be good. As we are on a fixed income and someone fixed it low.
Thanks to all
Carl
