I would worry less about the lens than about post-wedding editing software. If you shoot at the highest resolution, you can crop whenever needed. With PSE, you can do wonders just with the levels command. In addition, get a trial copy of Portrait Professional. It will do wonders for facial photos. The bride will thank you forever. Overcast days are great for portraits. Flowers and leaves are more beautiful with rain drops.

I use portrait pro it's an easy program and I agree it will make the bride and others happy. Very user friendly

You are a brave, brave man. Since you have the lens picked I can only say - have lots of memory/cards, shoot a high quality jpeg and shoot as much as possible. In this situation with your level of experience by shooting everything your odds of having acceptable shots goes up exponentially. Use the flash, watch out for blurr, be creative and most of all, try like hell to have fun with it. Good luck.

I agree with the 28-80 if you had to take just one lens.

28 - 80 is a full frame lens or a film lens , use the 18-70 mm or the 18-135 lens

ok, im a amature photographer mostly do it as a hobby. I am doing a favor for my brother and am taking some photos for his friends very small wedding. His friend has no money to pay for a pro to do it and well im free!! Heres my question. what lens will be most beneficial for me to rent that can be flexible enough for any situation that will come up. I have a nikon 5100 and as I understand it is an outdoor wedding. Heres the best part, the wedding is on this Tuesday!! I know,i know. just found out today. The forecast calls for cloudy with chance of showers. If anyone can help me on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Im not expected to do pro work but would like the best chance possible in giving the best pics i can for them. I was thinking a telephoto lens but again Im asking you guys (the pros) thanks to anyone in advance . peter

My number one lense for a wedding is the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8. My 50mm f1.4 is second. The 14-24 by Nikon has less lense distortion and is great for groups after the wedding. The 50mm is good for during the wedding when shooting participants walking up the isle. Longer lenses have their place but are poor in low light at indoor weddings. If you have more than one body then you can use a moderate long on one and the wider lense on the second. If restricted to one lense and you intend to rent...go with the 14-24 Nikon. You indicated outdoors, but anticipated cloudy weather. I still think long lenses are not for weddings. There is too much movement and you need fast shutter speeds. Long lenses don't handle movement well except in the hands of experts.

ok, i have the lens (70-200mm) found it pretty cheap used of course. I plan on getting there an hour early to do some test shots and figure the best settings based on the lighting there. I will be bringing my lens that came with the camera for when i panic and need a lens that will auto focus.lol
anyways i will actually be applying all tips that you people gave me. thanks again, so much

You'll spend a lot of time shooting from across the street instead of being at the wedding, if this remains your choice.

Bill, I understand what your saying about me being on the street shooting the wedding. Truth is I would prefer to be out of sight out of mind. If I could be a tree and blend in the more relax I would feel and less pressure. this is why I'm not a pro. I lack the confidence, the skills and knowledge. I was the guy in chorus as a kid who would lip sync rather than sing because I have a horrible singing voice. So with that being said. They know I'm not a pro,I know I'm not a pro and you know I'm not a pro. Just doing my best to capture some memories than them have nothing. Everyone has been great in helping me so thank you very much and yes that portrait studio is great. I was playing around with it tonight and I love it.

I shoot frien's weddings with the 70-200 so I can get or try to get an informal portrait of veryone present. Shoot the musicians if there are any, and any chilfren present. Always shoot the "get-a-way" car with the Just Married paint job.

Besides what lens to use, the cloudy day will make everything have a blue-ish tint and you will have reduced direct sunlight to work with. I'd use forced auto fill flash for every shot taken outdoors to make sure the subjects are brighter than their overcast background. Keep them several feet away from any hard object though because the flash could cause shadows on that object you don't want.

For the group shots, getting the people together can be like trying to herd cats. One tip an "Old Timer" gave me that has been invaluable, is to find someone who wants to be "In Charge" to help coral the groups.
I have found that the "Mother of the Bride" is an excellent choice.
They know all of the Guests, and giving them the "Power" to compose the Groups relieves you of the liability for the way the shot is composed.
Also, it keeps her busy, and not breathing down your neck so you can concentrate on the photography, and "Don't cut off the DRESS!" lol Best of luck.

I like your informal fun posing technique in these examples. The bride and groom are more likely to have good memories of the moment many years from now. Too bad one guy got covered up in the middle shot and the bride partially covered her face in the bottom one. Only so much you can do with a herd of cats!
