Yes I though so too...I just purchased a 7200 about 6months ago, I wish I had waited...I guess I'll have to sell my D7000 to make room. :)
Still trying to figure out how to assign (set up) Preview Button button with single point AF .

You can set the Pv button to select Spot Metering.
In the MENU, go to F3 (Assign preview button) - Select "Press - move cursor to right - select "Spot Metering".
This will permit you to select SM whenever the Pv button is pressed, it will revert to the original setting when you release it.
Hope this is what you were looking for!!
Have fun!!
A little different on the D500 but figured it out with your guidance. Many thanks, Allan

Sorry! thought you were asking about the D7200.
D500 - MENU - CONTROLS - f1 - CUSTOM CONTROL ASSIGNMENT - Pv - Press Multi Selector center button - Scroll to - AF-Area Mode - Hit right selector on Multi Selector - Single Point AF - OK
Good afternoon Steve - Got a quick question if you have time - I have a D5 & D500 and am curious about the focus setting you would suggest for shooting HS Football. I've tried a few and am still not satisfied with my results. I have a difficult time following the ball carrier at my age (73) and am hoping you might shed a little light on the subject. Since, when a runner is penetrating the line, he will get lost sometimes and trying to keep the single point focus on the ball carrier is difficult - Any suggestions would help
Thanks
