John,
You can see my reply to Jerry as to what computer I have/recommend.
With the setup, I now have, I can run LR 5, PSE 14, Excel, Firefox and Eudora s/w all at the same time with no problems.
Since I refuse to "upgrade" to W10 from W7, I would recommend Lenovo, since most of their models are capable of being backdated to W7.
While I have been a Mac user since 1987, let me be the first to say that their utility has lagged. You can no longer get a Mac laptop with an optical drive - so no more reading and burning CDs/DVDs. Got software or photo file collections on DVD or CD - tough unless you find a stand alone optical drive and it is compatible with your Mac. And the latest OSX El Capitan - compatible with all your important software? Better do a thorough information search on what you have that will work. It is possible to find older Macs that have optical drives, but if it is on the Apple obsolete list forget the Apple Store Genius Bar. The Mac is still a great intuitive machine with basic apps that are well integrated within OSX. But for critical photo, video, audio and office work you must go to other software options.
Windows 10 works almost identically to Windows 7. If you buy a new computer with 10 installed just be sure anything you add is current (drivers and updated software) and you shouldn't have any problems at all.
Just to let you know that I have been in the same dilemma and asked this group for assistance Much was given and greatly appreciated
I took all this advice, reviewed how I would use the computer and determined to order a Dell laptop 15 in screen with a 4k display, 16 Fb of ram and 512 solid state hard drive with Windies 10 I ordered through the Microsoft store and saved over 600 rather than directly through Dell
I agonized over this decision until I read numerous reviews which played this system over the Apple MacBook Pro In addition a number of people and the reviewers stated that Apple is falling behind in the computer technology dept at the present with the screens and operating systems
So far my new computer is great and I am satisfied but the decision is only yours to make irregardless of how much inpu you have
This is only my 2 pennies worth based on my recent decision and the brown truck delivery 10 days ago

Jerry, I have the Dell XPS 8900 i7. It came with only 8GB RAM. I upgraded to a SAMSUNG 1TB SSD. That speeded things up a bit.
BTW, I cloned my old drive to the SSD but eventually had to reinstall everything.
Then I replaced the RAM with 32 GB of Corsair (Vengeance???). Not much of a change.
I'm not a real Dell fan, but this computer runs pretty darn good.
I wouldn't leave the old drive in the computer. You can buy an enclosure for $25-30 and use it as an external. Safer that way.
I actually took the HD that came with it and stored it in a closet in case I have to start from scratch or sell the computer.
Just my 2ยข.

I love the speed advantage of the Samsung SSD. With Win10, PS, LR, and everything else, it's under 9% full. All data is on the internal D drive. I back up to externals, so I feel safe. I have older external drive in enclosures, but I prefer to rely on newer ones for security.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Greatly appreciated. I am considering the Asus M32CD-US010T Desktop with Intel Core i7-6700, 8GB DDR4 Memory, 2TB SATA Hard Drive+ 8GB SSD Hybird.
Open for comments.
Thanks

My wife and I use Gateway. I keep lots of photos on mine, my wife doesn't shoot. We've had pretty good luck with these so far.
I made a list of what I wanted in a computer aimed at photography, post processing, and general computing. I took into account ram, hard drive space, video card, etc and went to several stores. I finally decided on an MSI gaming computer. Seems that gamers want the same thing. Just my preference.
Unless you already have a great laptop, I suggest you buy a laptop (15.6" is good, like Asus or Lenovo with 16gb of ram, using I7 processor with high res. screen 1920 minimum) and then you can use an external monitor for more photo viewing. You can then use the laptop in any room by itself. This is what I use for editing photos, along with a desktop with 32gb of ram and 2 - 34" monitors. You can't have too much screen usage when editing/viewing photos. Make sure your monitor used hdmi and the computer has a hdmi output. Good luck
you can save taxes and shipping by buying the computer at BH Photo or New Egg instead of local.
