This is not just a mere matter of trying to update the Firmware in my a6000 from v1.0 to v3-4 (whatever). As a result of following the instructions given in the Firmware Updater download, somehow my camera now doesn't turn "on" in terms of any sort of functioning. I have 3 different charged batteries I just tried using with it. All that happens now is that if I reinsert a battery, close the lid, a small rectangular-shaped red light, located immediately adjacent to the battery compartment on the bottom side of the camera towards the rear, comes on, even if I don't switch the camera on! It stays on even after turning the camera on, ... then off, ... then on again, etc. I do know that after leaving it this way for a couple of hours, that red light does go out.

I don't know of any externally-accessible 'reset' button to push. I realize may have to contact Sony on this matter, but thought I'd first see if any of you know anything about this phenomenon or how to fix it. I bought this a6000 in November of 2014 from B&H. I don't think I purchased any extended warranty on it.

SO WHAT, PRECISELY, DID I DO? This is the sequence of steps I took, to the best of my knowledge. In retrospect, the order of the first few steps I took was probably not the "proper" way, but I've never had a machine break down as a result.

- I plugged the USB cable into the a6000's "multi" jack.
- I turned on the a6000, then plugged the USB connector into one of my MBP's ports.
- Then, when there was no reaction, I re-read the updater's instructions, at which time I disconnected the USB cable.
- So, just as the instructions read, I hit the Menu button on the camera, scrolled over the "briefcase" (aka Setup) submenu, and selected "USB Connection", followed by changing its option to "Mass Storage".
- Then I clicked the 'Next' soft key on the updater's box.

It seemed that I was well on my way to updating the Firmware. One of those "growing" colored-bars appeared and I could see it incrementally elongating, a sign of progress being made. A few minutes later I checked, and the Updater Box on the MBP screen stated that the Update had to be aborted.

I then went through the whole cycle again ... and the same thing happened. Finally, on my third attempt, I discovered that my camera wasn't doing anything, except for that mysterious red light. I turned the camera off; changed the battery. I tried to do the cycle again, but couldn't. The Updater stated that it couldn't communicate with the camera.

If anyone has what I might call a sophisticated understanding of these mechanisms and this model camera, I would certainly appreciate your help and will do my best to answer any pertinent questions.

Thank you,
lev29 :D

There may be some incompatibility with your computer. Try try try again even if consumes time as much as an hour. If not under warranty, it is all on you. Errors in firmware updates are usually the cause. I don't own this camera. Perhaps some owners can offer better assistance. Do it over again first.

Contact Sony the A6000 have an extended warranty. Also, it sounds like the download may have not completed, especially if you rule out that the camera worked fine before uploading the new software. Good luck

Call Sony, they may be able to tell you what to do. I recently updated mine and had no trouble using a MAC. They may be able to help you over the phone. I hope.

Same thing happened to me I bought an 6000 at Costco tried to update it and turned it into a brick. I returned it to Costco and got another one. I refuse to try to update and I am leaving it the way it is. If I wanted to do it I would send it to sonyand let them update it

You can not upgrade to the last version, you must to do all previous updates step by step

That's not true, I updated mine from 2.0 to 3.10 in a single update and there was an update in between.

This is not just a mere matter of trying to update... (show quote)

I have not experienced your issue buy my 6000 has literally locked up on two differenct occasions. In the menu on the last tab to the right there is a setting reset button. It offers two modes the default on mine is reset camera settings and the option is initialize. Initialize erases all settings and reverts the camera back to the way it came out of the box. This might be a pain because you will have to go back through and redo your preferred settings but it worked twice for me. You may want to initialize then turn the camera off and on and try your update on the camera the way it was when new. Just a thought. May or may not help.

Thank you! Your suggestion looks to be the most promising at this time! I shall work on using it today.

i may ultimately have to return it to Sony, thanks. But if you re-read what I wrote, the USB connection was not severed until AFTER the Updater stated that the Update was Aborted.

If you're correct, then Sony has developed their own Catch-22! Do you really believe that Sony is that stupid? Sony does not provide any warning first that I must do an Update to v2.0 first? HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE CORRECT? Where did you read this?

Thank you. That's what I plan to do if I'm unable to succeed using Morning Star's URL.
