Monterey Calif trip suggestions

I will be going to Monterey CA in a couple weeks. I have never been to Calif. I will have some time for photography. Any suggested must get shots in the area? Many thanks in advance.

HUGE QUESTION? How are you getting around down there and how long a stay.

Waterfront
South to Big Sur (Hwy 1 if I recall...excellent beaches and you may see some 90 year old naked wrinkled hippies from the 60's.... remember the 60's. you'll be the only one in Big Sur who does!!!)
Carmel for the ultimate tourist trap. Kim Novak lived in a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home on the rocks overlooking the ocean. Filled with little cottages and white picket fences. All the cottages have/had names. That's how the postman delivered mail in Carmel... by cottage names.
Missions around the area...
The Ocean... duh?
Planning any trips South down HWY 1... very iffy. Highway 1 is sometimes there and sometimes not. (Washouts)
North to the Cambria area and Hearst Castle (somewhat long drive) 150 miles - 3 hours.
Hearst Castle to Monterey 100 miles. 2 hours+/-

All of Monterey will be great to photograph and the 17 mile drive it's just beautiful place on the central coast.

If you are interested in photographing wildlife, take the boat ride on Elkhorn Slough.

I was just there last week. Point Lobos is about 10 miles south of Monterey. It's just past Carmel. Lots of hiking trails, small beaches and rocky coast.
Anywhere along coast in Pacific Grove. Check the tide tables and go during low tide. Thsi time of year it's about 10 am and 4 pm +/- and hour. Lots of cool stuff to see in the tidepools. Don't miss the jetty by the Coast Guard station in Monterey. Thousands of sea lions and harbor seals call it home.
Further south is Big Sur. The coastline is a must see. You'll cross a small bridge, can't remember the name, but it's in all the car commercials and many others. Quite scenic. I've only scratched the surface. I'm sure others will chime in with more.

WOW! Thanks to all who responded so quickly! I will be in Monterey for 3 days and then we travel north to Napa Valley wineries for 3 more days. The suggestions you have provided give me some places to seek out. Your images and links are very helpful. Thanks again.

Spend the few dollars to go through Pebble Beach on 17 Mile Drive. The Lone Cypress (if you can, go fairly early in the morning to miss the tourists), Bird Rock, & beautiful ocean views. Lived on the Peninsula for 12 years & would love to move back.

There are a lot of good suggestions in the comments here, covering almost every spot I was thinking of. The only one I would add is the boardwalk at Santa Cruz and then the drive just north of there along the beach. Stop to watch the surfers.

Every place around Monterey is a Kodak moment. Take the coastal drive south in the afternoon for the must see photo ops, then finish the day with dinner at the Nepenthe restaurant at Big Sur and watch the sunset. It is our favorite thing to do at the end of a beautiful day.

Assuming you are driving, take an hour after crossing the Golden Gate bridge to visit Sausalito and Tiberon; in Tiberon, take the drive up the mountain through Belvedere. It's a steep, narrow and winding road but there are some spectacular views of the bay.
Years ago when on business trips to the bay area I used to take a bus to Sausalito - they dropped you off at a fire station at the top of a hill overlooking the town. The walk down the hill offered some great sights, Sausalito has some great restaurants and you can take a ferry ride across the bay, right past Alcatraz and back to San Francisco. It made for a very pleasant way to spend perhaps half a day.
