Is the D7200 worth the extra money for the casual photographer?
Thanks.

No.

Use the search function: "d7100 vs d7200" for a ton of comparison posts.

Another No.

Most of the reviews will point out that if you already have a 7100, the 7200 is only a modest upgrade.

So if you don't have the 7100 and are shopping both, diligent shopping may close the price gap to $300.... for a modest upgrade?

Not for me. That's a good chunk of another lens, an overpriced tripod, or other less worthy gear. Like a bag, huh? What about a $300 bag?

No I dont think so...the one advantage of the 7200 is the higher buffer...so unless you shoot in high speed burst...that is not relevant...

I have the 7100 and it is a very capable camera at a very good price.

I would say if you already have the D7100, it's not worth it to upgrade. The D7100 is already a very good camera. If you have neither, and can afford it, why not? Go for the D7200. The upgrades are minor, but they are upgrades. It does have a larger buffer, but it also has a newer, and (allegedly) better processor. Could you tell the difference between the two? Who knows. I got the D7200, because that is the one I wanted, and I'm happy with it. It's a long term keeper.

I would think a "casual photographer" would find it hard to beat a D7100 refurb vs a D7200 in particular.

You are no doubt correct on that. But since we don't know the OP's experience, it would be hard to say.

you are very vague as to what you want to photograph. assuming you have not purchased a camera yet, if you are just photographing landscape or your portrait subjects will be stationary, the d7100 will work just fine for you. if you will be shooting action subjects, such as wildlife, birds in flight, etc., the d7200 would be worth the extra expense. also consider where you want to take your photography in the future. if you are growing as a photographer, the d7200 would be the better option, as you would not need to upgrade in a few months when you find the d7100 will not keep up with your needs. also the d7200 will do better in low light with high ISO settings.
that said, you may purchase either camera at B&H photo, adorama, or Nikon as refurbished to save a little money.

Around $150.00 cheaper, I'd go with the D7100 for the casual shooter. Both cameras have 24mp and the same burst mode. You can also get a good deal buying refurbished.

For a casual photographer? No. If you shoot sports and want to continue using a DX body, then wait for the D500. If you want a worthwhile upgrade for almost everything else, then buy a D610 or D750. For my style of shooting the only upgrade in the 7200 over the 7100 that I have noticed is the better high iso performance. Where the 7100 would show a lot of noise and banding at iso 6400, the 7200 is clean. But how often does anyone shoot that high? If you have money to spend then move up to full frame. Even a casual shooter will see the benefit.

The D7100 refurb is six hundred and the D7200 refurb is nine hundred at B&H.

A casual photog would enjoy either and for three hundred dollars difference he could make his decision on the meager advantages of the D7200 regardless of his skill level. The differences have been beaten to death on the forum, that's why I recommended the search option.

You would be getting the shaft on one end or the other if you can't find a price difference of $300 on these two camera's.

Comparisions of new (7200) to refurb (7100) are right around $300 difference.

$150 difference on finding a new D7100 would mean you are paying more than it's worth, even as a new camera. If you did not like it, and resale comes into play, that's when you will pay for a poor choice.

The D7100 is almost the camera the D7200 is for many people.

I have a 7100 and thought seriously about a 7200. But the only difference that pertained to my type of shooting is that the 7200 has a bigger buffer. I didn't think that was enough upgrade for the money.

I recommend the D5300 as a much better camera than either.

It is smaller, lighter, takes the same images as the D7100, includes articulated screen, GPS, and wifi, IMHO has a better control system without the unreadable green screen and buttons to fumble over, and costs about 1/2.
