I am a little late to the realization that Google will stop supporting Picasa on March the 16th. They offer a solution with their other photo system. Is it an easy task to switch. Does the 'new' program have the same (or better?) features than Picasa? Do my collection of photos automatically move to the new photo saving system?
I will start the process later this evening but wanted to reach out first to try to understand what I may be up against.

I have heard that the change offers less features, but have not tried it myself. Thinking at this point it may be time to bite the bullet and go for Lightroom. Have seen the LR5 edition for as little as $70 vs $149 for LR6.
In my opinion, Picasa was never supported all that well to begin with, but I used it a lot. For a freebie, I think it is a great option.
My understanding is if you have Picasa, you can continue to use it. I'm going to hang on to mine for awhile until I can afford LR.

i'm missing something, I've been using picasa for years. and i'll keep on using it. I've never use it as a storage medium, just an editor. since I keep my images on a usb drive and picasa will still be on my computer, I see no downside.

If you were sharing/using picasaweb, automatically your collection should already be in google photos.

I posted a similar question a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to download the last version of Picasa and keep the install program handy in case I ever need it on a standalone computer. I would still like to know if you will be able to email out of the program (very handy, it automatically downsizes images to web friendly resolution) and if it will still upload to Google Photos, two features I use a lot. I spend most of my time in Lightroom, but these two features have proven useful to me both as a photographer and as blogger. Does anybody know about these two features?

I have been using Google Photos since day one, all my photos are stored there and I find that it is very fast, compared with other cloud services. It has a basic but good photo editor and it also is very good organiser.
All my photos are uploaded automatically from each of my cameras by the time I get back from a photo shoot.
Just go ahead and upload your photos to Google Photos you won't regret it and remember it's free.
I also have my photos on two PCs and two external hard drives as well.

Yes, I do the same, should be no problem. Though, I have Photo Shop EL, CC, and LR, but I like the cropping feature in Picasa, it easy and accurate, also the slide show video making is great!

I opened an account and added 2 pics to google photos back in Jan 2015. Then I downloaded the photos that I had just uploaded. They were smaller in size then when I uploaded them.
dont know why I guess Google compressed them.

also I get a message that I can only upload 15 GB of files.

and last when I upload RAW files, they upload, but they dont show up on screen. Just a blank space.

Do you have the ability to create albums, as you do in Picasa?

Also, I have used Picasa to bring my photos in from my CF cards, creating folders upon import. Will Google Photos allow me to do that, too?

Picasa is going bye-bye because not enough of your private information can be collected through Picasa.
