I missed this in my first read/reply to your post - I didn't realize I still had access to iPhoto - thanks very much for pointing it out - I think it has features that are superior to Photos that I missed when I upgraded to El Capitan/Photos - especially the edge blur feature - iPhoto also had a better "enhance" feature for simple, quick PP of otherwise acceptable pics. Thanks for your info.

I believe it needed a patch to run under Yosemite, and is gone from El Capitan, BUT, it was still available to download and the yosemite patched version ran under El Capitan.

I find that even though I am now a Lightroom kind of guy, sometimes I go into other programs to use one tool...

After reading your post, I went into my Apps folder and found I still had iPhoto - I moved it into the dock alongside Photos, brought up a photo from my Photos library and just dragged it into iPhoto - did the edge blur and moved it back into the Photos library - it couldn't have been easier - now I have the best of both worlds.

Has anyone found a way to get El Capitan to work with Picasa?

The latest Picasa works fine with El Capitan. Overtime I start picasa the latest pictures I took are automatically included in the database. Remember to check the folder manager to see if its looking in the proper folder with your pictures

There are 2 main things that I use Photos for:

1) To create slideshows that I can export and burn to a DVD for family

2) Apple Photo Books. With almost every vacation we take, I always get an Apple Photo Book. They are perfect for documentation and sure beat the heck out of sticking 4x6 prints into an album. The price is very reasonable to me for the quality of the paper and album covers.

I don't use it for PP, so I can't comment about that, but it does appear to be similar in design to iPhoto.

I have a 5yr old Mac desktop, my wife has a 3yr old one. Both run version 10.9.5. We are constantly being pestered by Apple to upgrade to El Capitan, but last time we caved in and upgraded, we lost some features in iPhoto. If we go to El Capitan we will lose iPhoto completely, in favour of Photos. Does anybody out there have an opinion on this upgrade, both with regard to Photos, and with any other features of El Capitan? General pros and cons of the two OS X versions would help, since I understand there's no going back. In particular I am interested in comparing the PP capabilities of the two choices. I am a computer dinosaur, so please don't get too technical!

It is CERTAINLY a gamble. I upgraded to El Capitan and had to use Photos because I could not do the special procedure to get a working version of iPhotos (which I read was available if one had a very recent version of iPhotos which was upgradeable). I gave up on that and opted to let Photos convert my iPhotos library. That process stalled at about the 24% mark and did so repeatedly. I gave up on that and simply imported my photos from originals, BUT that meant I lost ALL the descriptive information I had entered (as to location, people, events, etc.). Of course, all my Album groupings were lost, too. It also meant many of my images were sideways and had to be rotated individually if I wanted them upright for viewing.

Odd... seems I recall that when I upgraded to Yosemite, I needed a patch for IPhotos so it would work in Yosemite.... then when El Capitan came down, iPhotos was gone, replaced by Photos... so I restored iPhotos from a Time Machine backup and it has worked ever since....

In fact, if you look at apps from the app store iPhotos is still listed, at least it is for me.

Good pitch for using Time Machine to maintain about a year or 2 of backups for your Mac. ;)

Well, I was running Mavericks, so I did not have the upgrade(s) of iPhotos you had, nor could I manage to get the version I would have needed to work with El Capitan. (I'd be interested if anyone can send it.)

I've been looking at it off and on this afternoon and it looks interesting. For five bucks in the App Store you can't go too far wrong.

I had upgraded my OS and iPhoto with each new version, albeit, not for a few weeks after each release to make sure they really worked. When I upgraded to El Capitan, I got Photos and all my iPhoto pics moved over. Today when I opened iPhoto for the first time since upgrading to El Capitan/Photos, all the original functionality still worked, and my Albums/Projects were there - but my Events had migrated to Photos - now I set up new pics in "Albums" (the replacement for iPhoto Events), and can still view my old Events pics in Photos. A little inconvenient, but it all works together.

Yep, I'm using El Cap OX S 10.11.3 and I use a hard wired card reader to my computer and still unload my photos to Picasa with no problems. My iMAC is 7 years old. chase

I have upgraded to El Capitan. I still use iPhoto to manage my pictures. iPhoto is not being upgraded but still runs just like it did when they brought out the Photos replacement. I tried to use Photo but I don't like it. I don't like the look and feel. The primary reason that I don't use Photo is that it does not have a batch change command. When I go to a new scenic area (like a national park) I take a lot of pictures when I am loading a group of pictures into my photo management program I always title each photo, provide a description, and a location. I do that quickly with the batch change command in iPhoto. It took me a very long time to figure out how to do that in Photo and I still do not know how to increment a number in the title to make it unique. Since I use the batch change command in iPhoto so much I will not change to Photo until it has that capability. I guess a some point I will go to Lightroom. My problem with Lightroom is that I don't want to use it as a service that I pay monthly or whatever their payment schedule is. I also do not want to pay for upgrades that are bundled into new features that I don't know I want.
My biggest issue with iPhoto is likely an issue with Photos and maybe Lightroom as well. My issue is how to maintain a library across multiple devices. I have a Macbook pro, my wife has a MacBook Pro, I have a Mac Mini, and iPhones and a Mac Tablet. Oh well thats a different topic.

You might have an issue with the camera raw version... if it does not support your raw files they will not work....

How did you convert them to JPG?

Once an image is a JPG pretty much any computer can view them with using post processing software - you would need to convert them using Adobe DNG converter possibly, then Photoshop can read and work on them as DNG files.

If you provide specifics about Photoshop, the version and what version of ACR you have it would be a step in seeing if your camera is supported for raw.
