this was my first time to take pictures of a couple ( that weren't "a couple".) it's a little different when you're looking for a "look" that's not touchy feely...
I like the one where she's watching him play. Interaction is better than staring off into space or at something out of view, IMHO.
These are really great photos; the more you look at them, the stronger they seem to get. I particularly like their "unposed" look. A few suggestions (that I figure some may disagree with):
First pic: their almost somber expressions, their closeness standing together, and the way you shot up at them from below are terrific. The bright sun produces harsh shadows on their faces, (though you may be looking for that effect) and the background isn't nice.
2nd pic: the blue brick background is really nice here. You need more of it to their left though, in the direction they're looking, and crop the right side in a lot. The guitar adds interest and color, plus it hints why they may be together but not as "a couple."
3rd pic, B+W: Can you reshoot this one, with the bridges coming no higher than their shoulders maybe, so that there's just sky behind their heads? Or somehow with one bridge lower and one above them, but sky directly behind their heads?
4th: As mentioned above, she's watching him play--very nice. I really like parts of the background--the red steps, the gray concrete rail and column behind him, the red brick wall behind her. I dislike the plywood in the window and the electrical fixture. Can you reshoot this against the same background but find a place where it's simpler and less distracting? It might also help if her eyes were open a bit more.
5th: Harsh sun and shadows. Love the bridge, but again I think it shouldn't be directly behind their heads.
6th: Train tracks are great. I wonder though, if they were both standing to one side of the tracks, leaving the tracks' perspective unobstructed if it might be a stronger shot? I'd crop all that empty sky above their heads.
Apologies for going on at such length, but I really do admire these photos and feel that with just a tiny bit more work they'll be fabulous. BTW, I'd include a guitar in more of the shots; they add a lot. Does she play an instrument you could include too? Just lying on the ground by her feet as you've done so very nicely with the guitars.

the band plays very "dark" music - so i was thinking "not the usual" during the shoot. i struggled with some of the shots, but they were pretty adamint on what they wanted. i like some of your suggestions, though. i can't reshoot, but i might try some re-cropping of the original shots. i've included a few more from the shoot. i welcome any suggestions. thanks!

Try not to crop out their feet if you don't have to would be my suggestion. Otherwise they look great !

Or crop much tighter - these look accidental.

Yes, or crop tighter as just mentioned,
Not just the feet as I mentioned, I should have said watch all the cut offs you have, elbows, guitars etc.
Unless there is some reason for it try and include these things, it can make for an awkward border merger.
Hope that helps,
Frank
