A more recent master of Traditional street photography,- Garry Winogrand
Garry Winogrand, a native New York photographer who, although he eschewed the label of "street photographer", went far to solidify and characterize the meaning of the term. Well recognized as a compulsive -if not actually frenetic- photographer of practically all he surveyed as he stood facing, or progressed into the face of advancing pedestrians in the borough of Manhattan, and, for shorter periods, also Los Angeles,CA, and Austin, TX
Admirers, acquaintances, and students of the works of many artists often define it more from their personal subjective perspectives and proclivities than objectively on the basis of the actual works themselves. So let it be with Winogrand.
In the judgement of many, but not all, the great majority of his images fall easily and comfortably within the classic limits of traditional street photography, as best defined by the works of the masters who collectively defined it. In the end, Winogrand's images cooperate with those of the other masters of the genre in demonstrating why "Street" is called "Street".
