I have no idea why someone decided to name these guys Red-bellied woodpeckers. I know there's a hint of red on the belly, but there's a lot more red on their heads. I'd have called them Red-naped woodpeckers.

Anyway, very nice pic. I've yet to get one of those. I'm working on getting images of every bird in North America.

We have a "dumb" woodpecker every spring that beats his head against a wood telephone pole.

Amazing how fast they "peck" rat-a-tat-tat...

Donald,
This Red Bellied has posed for so many nice pictures, don't you think it is about time you gave it a name?

I love birds and flowers, Donald. At my age I'm just glad I can still do something. I know it's not the best, but thanks for looking anyway

Nice capture of that Red-bellied Woodpecker.

They're called Red-Bellied because another woodpecker species already had the name Red-Headed. By the way, its a she, and she's a pretty bird...

Great shot. It is always funny to me that the females, as in your shot, always look like bald chicks (when compared to the males.)
