Ok I now own the Nikon 200-500mm lenses Thanks to everyone's good comments from this Website about how Great this lenses is !
Now I'm interested in Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III to go with it. Seems like you can never get as much zoom as you want. I'm wondering has anybody got any comments with this combination Good or Bad ?
Going to be used on D7100 & D750.

the 1.4 is a good fit, but the 1.7 is better.

According to Nikon, no a/f with the 1.7
The 1.4 has a/f only if the body supports a/f at F/8.0

Auto focus is important to me and the only TC that retains AF with the 200-500 and those bodies is the 1.4X.

Ok how well does the 14 III work with the 200-500. Is there any loss in sharpness ?

A t/c will always cause some loss of sharpness, with one possible exception. The Nikon 800 comes with a 1,25x that is actually tuned to each individual lens.

However, I believe that often complaints about excessive loss of sharpness comes as much (or more) from poor long lens technique as from the TC. You should be able to get excellent sharpness with the 1.4. I used a pre AF-s model with the first AF-s 500 F4.0 and got good results, after some practice.

Yes, and no. Yes, there is about a 5% reduction in sharpness, but the 40% increase in magnification more than makes up for it.

One thing I would suggest is that you look at the II version of the 1.4 instead of the III. The III only adds about 1% more sharpness. The 1.4II can be found used with perfect glass for $300 instead of $500 AND the III version is not compatible with about a dozen of the older non VR tellies, e.g., 300, 400, 500, 600mm f2.8s. (I have a non-VR 400mm f/28 and it needs to be on a tripod anyway.)

I also have both your bodies and the 200-500mm VR is so good I can shoot the D7100 + 1.4 handheld. That's 1050mm!

Also excellent on the D750. The AF is a little slower than some others but just a little anticipation makes up for that too.

Anyway, bottom line, hell yes, go for it!

I have both the II & III and as stated the III does not work with my older 400mm so I am glade I did not sell the II, but both are very good.

I used this combination with a D750 a few days ago to shoot some surfing pictures (autofocus). The pictures where obviusly croppied substantially.

I have the 200-500 and I have used the 1.4II with it. The result is acceptable in the IQ area, but I was experiencing about a 50% drop in focus accuracy for BIF. Static shots were good, in my opinion.

OK, some of the Nikon camera's have a threshold of F8, so, in any combination of F stop or converter that goes over F8 you lose auto focus. ie. if you put a 1.4 on a f5.6 lens you get a 200-500 mm zoom F 7.84 lens which means you have to shot wide open to get auto focus. YOU CANNOT STOP DOWN. Most folks are saying that the sweet f stop for this lens has been 6.3. So, the TC-14E 111 at 6.3 would be F 8.82. Which means you can no longer use the auto focus if you stop down to 6.3 on that lens. Bottom line, DON"T DO IT. I use this lens on my D750 and shot birds all day long. With this lens I can shoot almost 95% of what I need. It is my opinion that nothing good comes from TCing this lens.

This is just not true, Bill. Putting a 1.4 TC on the 200-500 changes the maximum aperture to f/8.

Nikon lenses focus at maximum aperture, then stop down to take the shot. With this combination, I can shoot at f/45 (that's f/45, not 4.5) and the lens focuses wide open at f/8 then stops down to take the shot.

Have you tried this combination? I have and it does work.
