For max sharpness, forget all zooms. Get a Prime lens....with one focal length....just a 500mm, or just a 600mm, or such.

As the years go by, that gets to be more nonsense. Today's top-line zooms are pretty damned good. I bought a well-used Nikon 400mm f/2.8 for well north of $3000. It's big (14 X 6 inches without hood), heavy (11 pounds), gives me choices of only 400, 560, 680 or 800mm with TC's, and has become one of my least used lenses. I can get as good or better results handheld with either the 200-500 with 1.4 TC (280-700mm) or the 70-200 f/2.8 with 2X TC (140-400mm).

I want either a (Tamron 150-600mm or Nikon 200-500mm) lenses.
I want to be able to get Sharp Images and Sharp Detail on Feathers when Shooting Birds. Lens will be used on D750 and a D7100.
Saw some photos Recently by Nikon 200-500mm Posted Here of some Birds but Feathers didn't have any Detail or Sharpness. (But the guy was very proud of them). Don't know if they where Over Cropped or What was going on!
I downloaded images and I wasn't impressed.
Some people seem to Love the Tamron and Others Hate It !

Go to todays 1/13/2016 UHH and look at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-361282-1.html. and you will see a couple of great photos taken by one of the best bird photographers on this site. His name is Regis and ask him what he thinks about the Tamron 150-600. These photos were taken with this lens. It's all a matter on how to use it.

Ok I've been reading a lot of good information that everyone has posted but I'm still not sure which lenses it will be. One minute I'm leaning toward the Nikon 200-500 and then someone will post a picture and make me rethink about it. Same thing with the Tamron 150-600 I'm seeing good photos and then I'm seeing some not so good.

It's the photographer, NOT THE LENS. You cannot, and should not make a lens decision based on what you see posted on UHH. IT'S THE PHOTOGRAPHER, NOT THE LENS. And, by the way, always ride with the brand, Nikon is the way to go, the ONLY way to go. My opinion only, but it's the one that counts, the old Nikon rep has spoken; again and again.

You might want to consider the Nikkor 80-400mm lens. It has a little less reach, but is a fantastically sharp lens.
