Nikon D7100 flash - problem popping up

My flash will not pop up automatically, the latch releases the flash but I have to help the flash pop up. The flash itself works fine (after it extends). After the first time I help it up it will pop up - but very slow. It feels like the back part of the flash hinge is tight. I have had it cleaned by a camera shop locally but to no avail. Is there any certified Nikon repair facility around Dallas or are they just on the East and West coasts?

Then I would guess that either there is debris in the release mechanism or the camera has been dropped at some point and caused some internal damage.
Personally I never use the on camera flash except when utilizing it for Commander mode to trip remote flashes.

Skate, I may well be confused but it needs to be in Auto (green on the exposure mode wheel) for the flash to pop up. It is not related to the focus being auto.
After re-reading your post it does sound like a physical issue since it works sometimes.

It will pop up in the green made. It will also pop up in some of the scene modes like children or portrait but wont in scenic and some of the other modes. - Dave

Yes it must be debris in the hinge or it might have gotten bumped and bent the hinge. I use it is in the green (auto mode) and also some scene modes but it still does the same thing. It used to work fine in all of those modes. Thanks to all for your help. I might have to send it in to a Nikon repair shop and have them look into it. Thanks again. Skate

To your original question: (not to belabor a dead horse..much)- I suggest you send to Nikon, no matter whether Dallas area or other. Since all dials, buttons, menu settings are "good," *something* seems/sounds wrong with mechanism. Little hinges, slotted levers. (D7000/D7200 here). Don't try to manually "self-adjust." The Nikon repair folk will make it work, To factory spec (and most likely go over/verify all other functions) before returning.

I had a similar problem with a d5100. It would not pop up even when I pushed the little button to open it. It was under warranty and I sent it ti Nikon, I live near Philadelphia Pa so it went to the repair center in New Jersey. Got it back in about 10 days, and has been fine since. They did not say what was wrong, they said they replaced the flash unit. I hope you can get it fixed soon.

I think there is a help phone number on the Nikon site, they will direct you to the nearest repair center and give you the shipping instructions. I hope you don't suffer from separation anxiety too much without your camera.
