Ive been considering adding a high end Point and Shoot to my equipment and the Lumix LX100 looks pretty good with the 1.7 Leica lens. I would appreciate any comments from owners experiences.

Thanks for your response. Looking for Pro's and Con's regarding dependability, ruggedness, and usefulness while traveling.
Would it be your choice to purchase again ?

I've owned the little Panasonic LX3 almost since it came out and was recently thinking of 'upgrading' to the LX100.
Mine doesnt get a lot of use but its in my pocket a lot, just in case.
Looked up the DP Review website and this is the opening paragraph;
Some of the most beloved premium compact cameras in the last decade are Panasonic's LX-series. They always offered larger-than-average sensors but, from the LX3 onwards, the big draw of those cameras has been their fast lenses.

Decided against getting one only because my old LX3 still performs when I need it and the pics are really quite wonderful. Nice colour and if I get the focus right, very sharp. Also the LX100 is quite a bit bigger (bigger sensor too) and I do like the shirt pocket fit of my old LX3.

Only criticism is as a 95% D300S and D7100 user, can never get used to not having a viewfinder. :(

The LX100 is a camera I've have on my Amazon Wish List for a long time now. I keep hoping against hope there will be some "too-good-to-pass-up" sale on it one of these days. I have an SX50 as a point and shoot right now and, while it has it's strengths (ulta-long tequila and very good IS), low light performance is less than stellar; hence my watching the LX100 prices. As pointed out, the LX100 is not a "shirt pocket" camera, but it's definitely smaller than my SX50, which is like a small DLSR.

I did get to handle an LX100 recently when they had a few at a local Best Buy. Really felt like a well-built item and made me want it all the more. One day.

It has been dependable for a year, it is as rugged as any of the many other cameras I've owned and small for travel is the point. Other things I like are the external dials and 4K video. I have a couple favorite enlargements on the wall that were extracted from 4K video frames.

Pros are that it is an exceptionally good camera in a small package that shoots sharp RAW, JPEG and 4K video.

Cons are that it is exceptionally small and may not be as easy to hold as a bigger camera and it does not have enough telephoto for wildlife photography.

I also have the smaller Sony RX100. Mine is version I. They are now selling version IV. It really does fit in a pocket. Had my RX100 done better video, I would not have the LX100. The RX100 IV does have 4K video, but it came out after I got the LX100.

If I had neither and was shopping for a small, quality camera I would look hard at both.

Be aware that the LX100 does not have a built-in flash. It comes with an accessory flash.

I would consider the Sony RX100 III for comparison.

I purchased a used LX100 from B&H last year. (it looked brand new!) It's a great camera - full manual controls and a viewfinder. It is very solidly built. I had a Sony RX100 which is truly a pocket camera. The LX100 is quite a bit larger and will not fit in your pocket, however, it is still very small as compared to any DSLR and is great fro travel. The 4K video is a nice feature and produces good stills. I am very happy with the camera and quality of the pictures.

The Sony rx100 MK3 or the 4 is an amazing choice. Read any review and many are trying hard to copy but have only come close. One reason is the zeiss lens. As far as giving up the zoom. Sony has a clear image zoom which is far superior to digital zoom and takes you from 3.7 to 7x which should cover you. It also has digital which takes you to 11x but I turn it off and never use it. You can also turn off clear image zoom. I put it in my jean pocket. I use the Alex White has a great book on the camera so you can learn how to maximize the abundant features. I would suggest 3 accessories. Mega gear uv lens protector. Invisable. Richard franiec grip. Sony semi hard screen protector. You will be amazed at the quality of the images.

Have never used the LX100, but if you decide to go a little smaller and for less money but with excellent photo quality and build quality and with Leica lens, look at the Panasonic Lumix LX7. Loved my LX3 and now the LX7.

Thank you all that provided your insights on the LX100. I appreciate them all and they helped me make the decision to go ahead and purchase one. It just arrived today and I am thrilled with all its features. Thanks again!!!
