My son is a new parent and wants a camera he and the wife can grab in a second, shoot quickly, and grab the perfect, sharp photo of the always moving rug rat.

They have no photography expertise and no investment in a current camera brand system. He is technologicaly adept...she is the opposite. Currently using camera phone and Canon S100. Budget $600-$800.

Would appreciate your suggestions based on experience.

Thank you in advance

I already posted my recommendation for the Sony a6000, almost the perfect camera for new parents.

But I want to add that Gary Fong has a number of Youtube video reviews and how-to videos on the a6000. Fong is a well-known photographer and inventor. He used to shoot Canon but switched to Sony. (TIA warning. He is now being paid by Sony. But that doesn't make him wrong.)

What I find interesting is that taking pictures of a growing child is not about portrait or even photography. It is about capturing a the moment.

What piece of equipment that is ubiquitous in these days if not a phone with a camera? There are now easy to use, always near and the quality has grown tremendously.

Your kid is about to take its first step w/o warning you. To get to your camera you need to move really fast and then, well, it is over. The little bugger is back on his butt while you return just stand there looking stupid with your fancy stuff.

Taking the most available device would have done it much better even if the 'photographic quality' is not there.

So, yes, my initial reaction is more valid than anything as this not about the details but the event(s).

Recommend the best camera, the best gear, go ahead. At the end of the day, there will be more phone snapshots quasi instantly shared than pictures taken.

I read somewhere that 70% of all photos are now taken with a smart phone. Easy and quick and always with you. iPhone 6 is 12 megapixels who would've thought you could get that an iPhone.

I think DSLR's are clumsy for photographing your baby, for the most part. The S100 should be perfect for taking photos almost daily as well as videos.

Keep it small and compact...like an rx100iii. Parents have enough stuff to carry around.

A Minnox is very small and compact.

The day has apparently come when cell phones are recommended over good p&s cameras or DSLR's for a parent to capture lasting memories of a newborn.
I don't buy it.

My daughter uses her cell phone quite a bit. The photos and videos are priceless but the quality leaves something to be desired. She always has it with her, though, so she's able to get those moments when they occur.

And that is the point.

Not everyone wants to be 'the' photographer. It is way too easy to forget that.

Really helpful.

Ultimately, they'll end up using their handiest tool to capture spontaneous events. Smartphone. Camera for planned events. Anything basic will work. Maybe a bridge.
