I bought a 3.5 18-140 for my 7100 and it works great, it's on the camera most of the time.

Frank,
Thanks for responding. It helps getting comments from folks who've actually used the lenses. It also validates that I'm sending my friend down the right road. Of the two lenses you've used, does anything make you lean toward one or the other? (Just kidding with this, but did you use your favorite, and let you wife have the other?) Seriously, did you develop a preference? They seem very similar, and both are available. Thanks again! Jim

I don't have a preference since she took it away from me along with the D90. Now she has the Tamron on her D50 since it is much lighter and easier for her to use. The D90 has a battery pack and gets pretty heavy with the lens. I have a Nikon 50 and 55-300 that stays in my bag 99% of the time. Either would make a great walk around lens I think. Depends on the price the day I was ready to order.

Needing lens advice for friend with D7100. Shoots primarily landscape, casual people photos, travel, some small kid sports, and flower macros. I'm thinking a nifty-50 or similar for portraits & macro, and maybe a Nikon 18-200VR, Sigma 18-250VR, or Tamron 18-270VR for most of her other shots.

She does a greeting card ministry with her photos -- just adds a bit of text and prints mostly 4x6. Occasional 11x14 prints, too, so no need for extreme enlargement or cropping. So she's just needing a nice, acceptable quality lens whose weight won't break her neck while traveling.

She's moving to Nikon from Canon (her decision -- so we don't need to get into that debate right now) so she has no other lenses. Budget is $200 or so for the 50mm or similar, and up to $400 for the 18-???. Good used or refurbished equipment is fine with her.

What would be your specific lens suggestions for her??? THANKS!!!

I recommend the Sigma 17-50 f2.8.

She probably should get 35mm vs. 50mm for the DX camera.

If she really wants a telephoto the Nikon 55-300 is very nice and reasonable cost.

Your own photo preferences play a role. I once used Lightrooms library features to sort out which focal lengths I used the most and the likelihood of keepers. I turned out that 18-100mm would cover 80-90% of what I did. Having 200 or 300mm available felt good but looking at it objectively said otherwise. The outcome was that a 18-105mm went on my D7100 and rarely came off. The point here is not to advocate 18-105mm but to urge some introspection regarding want vs need.
PS: I know of one person whose "walk around" is a 10-24mm because that's the kind of photos he liked

PPS: I have book by a noted landscape/travel photographer and from the examples published it appears that he does nearly everthing with a 70-200mm.

I borrowed my sister's new Nikon 18-200 VR to carry on our San Francisco area vacation this spring. I was more than pleasantly surprised and rarely took it off. It is a very good, do everything lens.

I always recommend a 2.8 lens. I went from an 18-200 nikon lens to a Sigma 17-50 2.8 vr lens. I love the lens and so does my friend who also bought it. Don't miss the 18-200 at all.
With the rebate it's $469 at B&H.

The 18-200 VRII is my choice. It gives me the range I most use. It is light enough to be carryable. I had the Sigma you mention. It never got sharp enough for my taste. It was quite a bit lighter which was nice. It also had lens drop so I had to walk around with it locked. I was really unhappy with the performance. Not a knock on all of Sigma as I have three other Sigma lenses. It is rare that I would use the 300mm, so why carry it around all the time? My 18-200 is easily the fastest focusing lens in my collection, even faster than my two primes. I did consider the Tamron, but didn't get a chance to try it.

I have a Tamron 16 - 300 on my D7100. It is the only lens I use for my cropped frame camera. It covers just about every need I have for it. It is a remarkably good lens for the price, It even does near macro (about 1:2.9). It is sharp at 16mm but a little soft when out near 300mm. But I don't go out that far often. It is small & lightweight considering the focallength. Tamron periodically offers rebates on new purchases on it and you can also find good buys on craigslist (I bought mine for $375 in like new condition). The vibration control seems to me to be effective for about 3 stops. It is a very good, all around carry lens for someone that doesn't want to drag a bunch of lenses around.

I have a Tamron LD 28-200mm 3.8-5.6 for a Nikon. I own a Nikon D7100 and all of my lens are DX and I just do not want to use a full frame lens. The lens is very clean with not scratches or slippage. I won it in an auction not knowing it was a full frame. It will work on the D7100. Your friend is welcome to the lens and if she likes it all I ask is that I be reimbursed for the postage. I can send it out once once you or she tells me that it will be accepted. Please PM will the name and mailing address. I go on this auction site and I get some very good deals most of the time. The Tamron are easy to find and I have several of them for my D5100 as well. I admit I am a camera junkie and always looking for a good deal. You can also txt me at 770-597-2681 and let me know you are inquiring about the lens. It has no caps on either end and there is no dirt or dust seen on it. I have kept it in bubble wrap boxed up ready to send to one lucky person. My name is Pat and I am a retired Air Force medic!

June 2014, I was using a Canon Rebel when I bought a Tamron 18-270mm because I was attracted to the idea of using just one lens on my Inter-changeable Lens Camera. That camera died in May 2015, but by that time I had gone back to a two lens solution, because I discovered that I hardly ever took pictures on both sides of the 100mm mark on a single trip, and there truly are Image Quality issues with any lens which has a zoom of more than 10x. When the Rebel died, I went back to Pentax, so I had to buy a full set of modern lenses; now I am using an 18-135mm Pentax lens and a 70-300mm Sigma lens; for me, I find that combination works better than the single 18-270mm Tamron lens. As always, YMMV.

Good thought about shooting on both sides of 100mm on the same trip -- I hadn't thought about that. I appreciate your personal mileage report <grin>. Jim

Denny, From your list of equipment it looks like you've got some glass to make selections from -- it says quite a bit that you use the 18-250 most of the time. Thanks for responding!

Sounds like you like that Sigma a lot. I've had a lot of very positive comment about that lens (both posted, and PM). Many thanks for taking time to respond!
